Hadn't heard this before, but supposedly, Tesla has developed a 44160 (44mm x 160mm) cell that will be used in the Model 3 (rather than the previously announced 2170) and in future Models S and X.
Tesla could be using a "4416" battery cell in Model 3 and next-gen S, X fleet

Assuming they did recently develop this much larger cell format, it seems unlikely Tesla would put this into the Model 3. After all, they have been very risk-adverse when it comes to including new features and technology in the car that may have an impact on planned roll-out and ramp-up.

and if they stand them on end vertically like in the current designs it's going to make for one very thick battery pack!
Heat disappation though has to be the biggest question.

Here's one for Elon - How about you make a battery as a cylinder, coolant running through the center, laid end to end to make a tube for the coolant?
Could optimize the cooling vs the thermal conductivity vs the surface areas really quite efficiently this way
Hey - I'm claiming IP if nobody done it before :)
