Rust Proofing M3

You must be looking at a different video or have bad hearing. He did not call it a clever idea. He said it could be made of aluminum for less and be lighter and stronger. As he say's (49:50)"Quirky for the sake of quirky is not good business. At the end of the day you have to make a profit".

I really like what Tesla is doing and really hope the EV market grows. It is just that Tesla with it's debt load and poor manufacturing is not a good business case. Maybe if they get the help GM and Chrysler did and go thru a structured bankruptcy and remove the debt from the books and maybe a partner than can produce cars better. I just don't see them being able to compete in the mass market any time soon and be profitable.
Are you kidding me?

"I think again...its one of these...one of these ummm….one of these dichotomies. You look at it and you say "Oh...why'd they do that" and then you say " What a cleaver idea here and why did they do that over there" The whole car is like that. "

That's the direct word for word quote at 48:00.

What a cynic and a naysayer. I now fully understand why Elon skipped over certain people in the earnings call.

He did call it clever. You're just a troll.

Tesla is not going bankrupt. They are spending all their money and more to grow. They are not wasting it on pointless things. They are not building boring or inefficient cars like GM and Chrysler did. If Tesla ever goes bankrupt, it won't be for the same reasons that GM and Chrysler did, and I'm sure they make plenty of profit from each and every car they sell.

Totally wrong. He was not talking about the suspension arm as cleaver. The arm is part of "why did they do that there" comment. If you continue watching he talks about it being quirky for the sake of being quirky and how it could be produced in better at less cost as I said earlier.

Yes they did think it was ingenious. You are wrong.

Where have you been?

Tesla has 450K people waiting in line for the model 3 alone and have already reached 5K cars per week. They have a year of model 3's to make without even getting another reservation or establishing any kind of advertising.

Orders opened to all reservation holders. Tesla must not be turning over the reservation holders to sales as expected.

Unless they try to sell a damaged car that needs repair work on delivery (and use a lower tier body shop to do the work after which the work has to be completed again at another facility, couple that with the outsourced loaner vehicles and the costs start piling up). Otherwise, they *should* be profitable with every premium version currently being sold.

I love my M3 - its totally awesome and has exceeded all our expectations.

Tesla crushed it from start to finish with us and our reservation/order. Very thankful to have the most sought after vehicle in the world sitting in my garage charging right now. Anyone who has major negative comments obviously is bias for who knows what reason? I also have bought and sold the stock twice now for $79 profit per share the first time and $40 profit per share the second time. I'll rebuy is it ever goes back down to $280ish again. I feel it will sit between $275-$365 for a bit now....

As I don't know what all those sprays are... are you saying that because of the manufacturing process we do NOT need after market rust protection?
What I'm saying is that there are very few parts that can actually rust.

AND...you can no longer drill in to crevaces and/or spray rust proofing everywhere because rust proofing has been known to eat through cables.

The problems of rustproofing these days far outweigh any possible benefits ( of which I can't find any ) . Just look out into the streets today and find me a car made in the past 10 years that is inundated with rust.

DONT DO IT, its worst for your car!!!! Let me explain with PROFF

First I live in Northnern Ontario Canada, 7 months of winter driving a year.

Subject vehicle 2009 Honda Pilot with 300,000 km (186,000mi). Never undercoated upto this point.... so I thought I have an M3 coming and when i was with working with BMW the factory always said NO to aftermarket coatings... But I wanted to experiment.

So I went to Canadian tire and bought cans of Corrision free 3000 (rated higher than Rust Check, but basically the same) and I treaded HALF of the vehicle, why half, its the ONLY way to see if this snake oil works....

Observations during the winter, treaded side ALWAYS had slush, snow, crap and brown crap sticking to it similar to the stuff we get in our fenders, ofcouse oil is wet stuff sticks....... UNTREADED side, nothing sticks, snow and crap flys and dries off fast.

Fast forward to spring and see the AFTER winter results of underspair VS non.

MS & MX are aluminum body so no need for rust proofing.
Just picked up my M3 which is predominantly steel body with some aluminum. I plan on keeping my M3 for at least 20 years (I have a history of doing so with ICE so this EV should last well beyond that). My main concern is rust and living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the roads are heavily salted in winters. I've used KROWN rust control for many years and found them to be the best. My Toronto Tesla Service Ctr. rep stated not to rust proof due to potential for rust proofing solution to enter into the battery compartment. I would have thought the battery compartment would be completely sealed to prevent this. Looking for a second opinion from TMC contributors. I'll also be asking for 2nd opinion from Tesla.
PS. Love my M3.

Edit: KROWN is quite extensive. First visit has them drilling the car full of holes and filling with plugs in the quarter panels, wheel wells and other rust prone areas which allows their product to reach all areas of the car body.

I actually registered here just to answer you. There is only one underbody specialist in Ontario, it is Patrick Farray in Ottawa. Lots of people come from Toronto to do their car once, from Civics to 911 to million dollar cars, he has done them all. He has shown me lots of pictures of how Krown oil damages cars like yours or mine.

Your concern is valid- at 23% salinity (twice sea level on any de-icing operation in Canada), a one year exposure would eat several thousand microns, or 2-3 mm. especially brakes- two winter on any big brake kits (I get infinite with Cadmium plating, but it cannot be done to zinc coated rotors, which only lasts 2,000 hours or 3-4 months the first winter). The issue with M3 and any under-body that actually traps the salt water, and no car wash can remove it. Krown oil compounds the entrapment of salts UNLESS they open all your panels and know exactly how to spray your M, which they do not. 4th year when damage kicks in, owners come crying to Patrick. So on your M3 the most vulnerable part of the car is the subchassis, and trapped salt will rot it fast. Not as fast as a Civic with under panels today, but 4-5 years major damage.

tesla has another issue- unlike your bavarian, is cheap grade untreated steel, so it will rot (so say reports) in our climate esp Ottawa/Montreal a la Hyundai/Mazda. The bavarian chassis steel, high grade to commence, goes through miles of galvanization and prep- which T does not do at all, just paint. So when 20 year old e39s, which were not rust proof but high grade steel, go around immaculate today, your m3 should last as long or longer, provided the key vulnerability (subchassis and panels) is addressed.

In 5 years I did only two rustproofs with Fari, pristine under-chassis at 100,000 kms. Other people bring their cars, second winter, and indeed rust is already in.

Tesla folks are right about the oil, unfortunately. I would enter, and then oil starts softening (though not Ptrick's which is neutral) all rubbers and then salt gets in..
