RWD order converted to AWD delivery

I originally ordered a Red Multi-coat black interior 19" wheels RWD modely Y with FSD. In early July I asked my local vehicle specialist to change my order to AWD(only change) and on July 8th I received and email stating the change had been made. Spoke next day with my vehicle specialist and they stated delivery would take 4-8 weeks. It is now past 7 weeks and I have yet to receive a VIN and since I am in NC, I doubt Tesla is going to make it in 8 weeks. I also realize that the 4-8 week statement was just an estimate, but even now, Tesla's own website states an order today will take only 3-5 weeks. Anyway, I am wondering if any other RWD preorders that changed to AWD have received their vehicle or are there a lot of people in my same situation?

I have already read & commented in that thread. I think there are many other RWD to AWD converts who are also not getting their orders filled. I even read in one thread that a RWD to AWD buyer cancelled their order and just ordered a new AWD again since they were so frustrated with the lack of communication they were getting from Tesla on their original order. I have never gotten a text from Tesla, yet I noticed a lot of buyers get general text updates on their orders.

I did the same thing and converted my RWD order to AWD when the price dropped in July. My SA is positive that the delivery will happen before September end and the VIN will get assigned any day. I am not pressuring him as I would like a later build date as well.

Supposedly many/most/some/all(?) $2,500 deposits of the RWD Model Y are being marked ineligible. I'm sure that it is something that happens, as others have reported. My belief is that changing your configuration from RWD to AWD doesn't do anything to "release" the ineligibility. My theory being that the whole point of ineligibility was to put those RWD orders on hold after Tesla decided to go with the whole AWD-only release in the spring. Something to allow whatever program assigns VINs to skip over these orders.

Why my order was released from ineligibility, I don't know - I simultaneously messaged Mark Gomez, Tesla Support and 2 delivery advisor contacts (not my assigned DA, as I didn't have one). A few days later I received a VIN, but never any reply to messages that it was being looked into - I simply got a call from one of those DAs saying they would take over my account, simultaneously with emailing me a VIN.

As a sidenote, my DA suggested that any $2,500 deposits were being worked on by "inside sales," which wasn't directly defined by my DA, but which I took to mean someone in Fremont versus the team in the showrooms - and that this could further complicate things, as outside of RWD orders, most $2,500 orders have been delivered.

TLDR: I believe that any $2,500 RWD -> AWD res holders should be as proactive as possible in seeing what's going on with their order.

thanks for the info, I spoke to my Tesla vehicle specialist earlier this week about being 'eligible' and she sent me a screen shot of my account showing my order was 'eligible to match'. I had contacted Tesla earlier about being 'eligible' after reading about the issue in another thread. I guess it is possible that I was 'ineligible' and when I brought up the concern of being 'eligible', they could had my account changed to 'eligible'. For those who preordered and put down a $2500 deposit, I am guessing that when the vehicle specialist/sale associate makes an internal change to a current available model, they may not be aware that they also have to make the account 'eligible'

Yeah, that was my theory for my order as well. Somewhere in throwing a bunch of emails to every Tesla contact I had, someone may have made it eligable.

Or someone finally recognized the error and is working through all of these types of orders...

Sorry for what might be a dumb question, but if you have a car on order and you cancel the order, does that make you ineligible to order a Tesla for a year? Like if I have a 3 that I've ordered and I decide I want an X, Tesla wouldn't allow me to make that change?

Similarly, I assume that if I called Tesla and said I'd rather buy a $52k AWD Y than wait for my $49k RWD Y to get made, they'd happily let me cancel the RWD and change my order, right?

No, cancelling an order does not make you 'ineligible'. I think the 'ineligible' has been applied to preorders for RWD and 7 seat configurations as they are not being built right now. I think what has happened is some of the RWD and 7 seat preorders have switched their orders to the current configurations being built and when this is done, the original 'ineligible' is still listed on their account so their orders are not getting filled.
If you want to switch to an AWD order now, I think the easiest thing to do is cancel your current RWD order and do a new order for and AWD.

Roger that. I understand now. My wife and I are debating switching our RWD order to the AWD- sounds like if we do that we'll need to make sure they remove the "ineligible" flag.

When I converted my 7-seat to 5, I had two option, cancelling and replacing, or modifying the order by Tesla Rep. I was told that modiying order was better and the other option had some implications. So my advice is to contact Tesla and let them modify it..

Well, I can answer my own question now, I finally got a VIN yesterday. I found it when I logged into my Tesla account and saw that Tesla wants me to 'Please pay off remaining balance prior to delivery' on my Model Y page. Looked the page over a little more and also noticed I now have access to a MVPA(under Documents), checked it out and found my VIN! I did not receive any text or phone call, this info just showed up on my Tesla Model Y manage page.

Congrats! What is the VIN range?

I guess you win, congrats!

Never considered this a race, felt it was more like solving a puzzle. I think our delays will be to our advantage as the Model Y quality has gotten better. Saw a YouTube video that in mid August(13th) Tesla started using ‘new’ tail lights that fit better. It also appears panel gaps have improved.

I should have put a smiley face on my last post. I too was interested in which path would be more efficient. My VIN delivery will probably not change much since I became "eligible" on 8/24 and reordered on 8/26. I'm guessing I'll be part of the Q3 push at the end of September.
