It is all firmware based on what Tesla told me today. The H and acceleration increase will apply fleet wide to all 85Ds. 85D owners will wake up one day to find their car is just about as fast as a P85
This is also the question that I am waiting confirmation on. My local dealer told me that the S85D I ordered will be with the older power. But I am not confident with her answer. - - - Updated - - - Tesla Pricing Canada - 10th April 2015 ON order with old S85D config New S85D S70D with prm pack S70D W/O prm pack Base Price $98,400 $97,400 $86,000 $86,000 Optional Extras Autopilot Convenience Package $4,700 $2,800 $2,800 $2,800 Smart Air Suspension $2,500 $2,800 $2,800 $2,800 Premium Package $0 $5,500 $5,500 $0 Subzero Weather Package $850 $1,100 $1,100 $1,100 Rear Facing Seats $2,800 $3,300 $3,300 $3,300 Leather seats $1,900 $1,900 $1,900 $1,900 Panaoramic Roof $2,800 $1,700 $1,700 $1,700 Destination & Regulatory Doc Fee $1,170 $1,300 $1,300 $1,300 Options total $16,720 $20,400 $20,400 $14,900 Total including options $115,120 $117,800 $106,400 $100,900 Sales Tax (15%) $17,268 $17,670 $15,960 $15,135 Grand Total $132,388 $135,470 $122,360 $116,035 QC rebate $8,000 $8,000 $8,000 $8,000 Grand total including rebate $124,388 $127,470 $114,360 $108,035 Saving from car ON ORDER -$3,082 $10,028 -$16,353 Value in 36 months (50%) $62,194 $63,735 $57,180 $54,018 Depreciation/month (tax in) over 36 months $1,727.61 $1,770.42 $1,588.33 $1,500.49 0-100km time 5.2secs 4.6secs 5.4secs 5.4secs Range 430km 435km 385km 385km HP 376hp 422hp 329hp 329hp Missing options ambient lighting none none Prm Pack Conculsion:- The car that makes sense is the 70D wihout the premium package giving a total saving of $16353 from the car on order. By saving $16353k I lose 45km range, 1sec slower 0-100km and power liftgate. I don’t care about ambient lighting or fog lights. I feel it’s a bit foolish to not go for the 70D - What is your view?
Below is from an email sent to me by my ownership adviser. This indicates the existing S85Ds (or at the very least not-yet-built, but 'old' configurations) will operate under the currently advertised specs.
I don't think you can look at this way. Cars at this level are all a bit foolish. It's just a matte r of degree. It's about your budget and preferences. If you can comfortably afford the 85D, you'll never regret having the added range. If the extra cost is making it tough then the 70D seems like a pretty good option.
99% of the time I drive locally. I do not drive more than 150km a day at the very maximum. In terms of performance they are both great. 4.6sec and 5.4sec, equates to 0.8sec difference. I have the money to buy a P85D but to me the 70D makes total sense. Normally if you look at MB or even BMW when you move from a S450 to S550 you pay $10k more for increased performance and added extras. With Tesla its just increased performance which with an electric car is not that noticeable. I drove a S85D for a weekend and then tested out the P85D and was not blown away with the difference.
I'm really upset now that my less than 6 month old S85 is already obsolete. Not only do I not have the autopilot hardware (missed that by about 1 week!), but now I don't have a faster vehicle with all-wheel drive, which I could have had at a slightly higher price (including the extra $2500 to have the autopilot software activated). If I upgrade now I would be losing about $20k (or more, since my MS is now significantly less desirable and I'm not sure what I would get for a trade-in)...
85D power upgrade and CORRECT price for Premium Package I just had confirmation that ALL S85D on order will be upgraded to new faster and more powerful HP as its just a firmware upgrade. I hope to test drive the 70D in the next few days so I can finally decide between 85D or 70D for that 10k saving. Also I was just told that the Premium Package is not $5500 but is actually $3500 or so.
I drove the 70D today and I can say that the drive is very similar to the 85D, in fact it felt more light to drive. Also the acceleration was extreme and when you floored the pedal at 40km/h your head slams back more than it did on the 85D. I will try to drive the new updated 85D if I can however I am pretty much sold on the 70D with the $11k saving.
