At least it seems ACT is going the right way and giving free rego for electric cars:
The ACT will offer free rego and help finance your new car if you choose to go electric

Admittedly, ACT is pretty small so I guess the per km wouldn't do well there.

"offering 24 months of free registration to anyone who buys an electric car between May 2021 and May 2023.

"Free registration and no-interest loans for zero emissions vehicles, along with a new network of 50 public charging stations for electric vehicles will make [electric vehicles] a real option for Canberrans who may have been hesitant until now," Emissions Reductions Minister and Greens Leader Shane Rattenbury said."

The wind's changing - even the SNDM (National Department of Marketing) has come up with something to spin as pro-ev (slaps forehead).
"The Government says it's looking at:
  • Co-investing (with the private sector) in charging infrastructure
  • A trial of an electric car fleet for COMCAR, which provides cars and drivers for politicians
  • Updating the "Green Vehicle Guide" website
  • Asking energy agencies to consider options for managing potential congestion on the electricity grid"

The Greens and Animal Justice Party MP Andy Meddick, crucial supporters for government bills in the upper house in recent months, say the tax alone sends the wrong message to prospective electric vehicle drivers.
...
Of 10 crossbenchers, only Reason Party MP Fiona Patten has voiced her support for the bill in its current form, meaning the government must sway two more crossbench MPs.

So you'll have "within 14 days after the beginning of that period" to report you kilometres.

Part 3 of the Bill provides for the suspension or cancellation of registration of a ZLEV where there is a failure to lodge a declaration within the required time, to pay an invoice by the due date or to present a vehicle for inspection (clauses [301] and [311]). These provisions may engage section 20 of the Charter as, although the registered operator will retain formal title to the ZLEV, they are in effect prevented from lawfully using it on a highway.

....

Clauses [521(1) and 522(2)] of the Bill, which provide that it is an offence to not retain all records and evidence that are necessary to enable the ZLEV charges to be properly determined for a period of 5 years after such record or evidence was made or obtained.

No record made if you call and advise the odometer whilst sitting in the car. Parked of course.

This is an absolute travesty.

Nobody filing criminal charges against the pollies that are now complicit in causing several hundred deaths a year in Australia caused by ICE air pollution?

Nobody filing a lawsuit to claim the direct health cost of $380 per annum our electric vehicles are saving the health care system?

Surely there's someone here with a couple hundred $k to spare on a good law firm in a just fight for a good cause?

Does anyone understand how the Victorian Government can charge Victorian registered car owners when they are driving in other states? The GST and tax component of petrol purchased in any State surely ends up as a State or Federal collected tax, so how come if a Victorian drives to WA the Victorian Government is entitled to collect a distance charge supposedly to make up for lost Victorian revenue?

I've just read a really positive article on the Australian SEA EV truck production startup. They have been on trial for some time with Ikea who have reported some success with their use. Having looked through the proposed RUC legislation I cannot find any other EV distance rate other than the 2.5c/km tax intended for light vehicles. This strikes me as being inconsistent with the intent of the legislation (to replace fossil fuel tax with a similar distance rate) as trucks consume much more fuel than cars. Is anyone aware of how Victoria is planning to charge trucks?

That's half the point.. Victoria (or any of the state's should not be charging a tax).

Should be the federal govt charging Every car and truck a road usage tax...
And then an additional Environmental Levy on Petrol and Diesel.

I tend to feel that road usage taxes for non-commercial vehicles are inherently regressive, and it should instead be funded out of general revenue. It seems like shorter commutes go hand-in-hand with more expensive real estate.
