Safe places to test 0-60

I thought we could start a thread on the better places where one could do a couple of 0-60 test runs.. I suspect there will be a couple of cars wanting to qualify their specs :)

And best to do that safely and without annoying the neighbours or the cops !

I’m based in Surrey, near Leatherhead - suggestions welcome!

Silly question time. Do you think this would be a silly thing to do with an SR+?

My current car does 0-60 in 12.8 so 5.3 is going to be quite the upgrade for me... Even if it's not quite up there with the Performance...

Track time I mean. Not hammering it about the countryside.

Dunsfold, Longcross, Goodwood and most other places you can think of are not available to book exclusively/ad hoc unless you have the correct insurance cover and the money to do it. No, it's not cheap or simple to get the insurance before you ask.

If you book a place on a trackday there may be an area the organiser will let you use to practise standing starts, but unless they have specifically set this up on the day it's unlikely as it will hold up other track users and may not fall within the risk assessment they have done.

There are 'run what you brung' days held as drag strips such as Santa Pod and Shakespeare so you might want to check those out.

I am in contact already with someone who will be organising driving events specifically aimed at new Model 3 owners (although all EVs will be welcome) where you'll be able to do acceleration runs, handling courses, slaloms, laps around a track etc. but it's a couple of months away yet.

In the meantime, stay safe!

No not silly at all. Very sensible in fact!
The only thing to think about if you want to do an actual track day is tyre wear and brakes. Even the performance is likely to need a few tweaks to make it a useful track car.

For acceleration runs and short handling circuits, any Model 3 would be great to use as long as you keep the runs short and allow time for the brakes to cool between runs.

Great, thanks for the reply :)

I've always wanted a go......

I dont want to do a track day, i just want to do acceleration runs... so I guess the questions still remains... where???

I agree with this. Brake fade would be the biggest concern for a track day. That was the main reason they fitted bigger brakes on the P+
Tracks are very hard on brakes and tyres compared to road use because of the relentless duty cycle with no time to recover. Even if you are not pushing all that hard they will still gradually get hotter and hotter if you keep lapping without giving them a breather like they naturally get in normal road traffic.

Ha! I used to live down that way. The mad mile at banstead https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A217_road
Totally illegal of course but you might get lucky at 2am.
I once had the pleasure of an emergency run down there in my Rover SDI with a Police escort and broke the 100mph along the stretch being followed by a panda with his blues on struggling to keep up. Sadly I blew the engine doing something even more stupid on the M25 in it's early days (125mph off the dartford crossing downhill bit at 3am). We were all stupid once and there was a time when the M25 wasn't just a car park.... not that you youngsters would know;)
