No. Gear are cut helical to spread out the contact surface and thus reduce noise. But since the force moves at an angle you have large sideloads on the gears/bearings/carrier you would not otherwise have. That makes them weaker than straight cut gears. In this case however, I don't think strength has anything to do with it.

Yes, straight cut gears are popular in motorsports for that reason. Straight cut gears can also be considered more robust since they are more durable if you can't increase the diameter of the gear wheel. The gear teeth will get thinner if you use the same diameter and number of gear teeth when you change to helical gears thus making them less durable. However I doubt Tesla would introduce gears that needs changing unless Saleen increase the power, which as I understand it, they haven't.
