I just want to thank the Model S help me avoid a side collision today:
Driving with moderate traffic, speed limited to 65 mph, the left side car didn't notice me on his blind spot when he wants to shift right.
I'm still in shock about this, so I can't remember if I steered right, or Model S helped me steered the wheel.
I only remember there is a chime warning sound and I immediately take the control and try to avoid the collision.

This is the same road I drove with Autopilot every weekday for months, this is the first time I've close to an accident.

This seems like a great moment for AutoPilot Auto-HONK to intervene... :) (Not a feature yet AFAIK.)

Glad you and the car are okay.

    Good outcome.

I wonder how AP would have handled it if there was a truck in the right lane?

@privater Pretty scary stuff. Great to hear everyone is okay. Even if anything did happen, kudos to the dashcam for capturing everything.

That's awesome! Now if they can upgrade AP to avoid hanging out in blind spots then I'd be even happier. I have to take over or change the speed in situations like this because I don't trust the other drivers....

He looks to be an occupied driver or lousy bad driver.
Not only did he drift into your lane, but he appears to have done it again further up ahead.
Really glad it worked out for you privater.

These types of drivers are my greatest worry when I drive..........not the AP technology, but the other drivers.

This is a great video, but unfortunately it won't get much traction in the mainstream media because they only report when bad things happen. Thanks for sharing!

Glad you are okay. Certainly the ultrasonic sensors picked u the approaching car and alerted you. I don't think AP is capable yet of steering away from an impending collision, but I could be wrong.

Side collision avoidance has been part of the firmware since 7.0. I had my own side collision avoidance incident last November:

Geez he was all over the road! I think trucks need fully autonomous AP sooner rather than later!
Edit: nonetheless, I never stray too long near a truck. Gun it.

AP is all good. Great videos of safety in action. I've had the "red hands of death" a few times and appreciate the vehicle and me avoiding a collision. Great system, but it doesn't replace heads up and safe driving from the adult in the car.
