Everyone needs to contact their reps about this proposed bill. It is insane. 3.5 cents per mile in addition to existing fees for electric vehicles. Insanity.

Current Washington state tax is about 50 cents per gal. If you figure 30 mpg, that’s 1.6 cents per mile so 3.5 cents is over twice as much!?

They must think that EV owners can afford the extra tax....in fact...most probably can. Most got that sales tax exception....so prob a net zero when you add everything up. Gotta pay to play in this wonderful state.

lol. Ugh. $1409/yr for a base model 3 when you drive 15,000 miles ($525) have the EV fees, and $659 for the RTA tax. Insane.

It really helps to have a conversation in person w/ data (like the comparison to petro cars listed above).

A lot of these representatives are just hearing from lobbyist over lunches. They need to hear what the voters think. A lobbyist can make something sound real good - that's what they are paid for.

I just sent in my feedback. This whole notion of pay be the mile has not been thought through nearly enough. I hope enough of us respond to make a difference.

You forgot to include existing fees. They want to charge $750.
Where do they want to charge $750? I recall seeing some horrible EV bill get proposed last yr, but don't remember anything that bad.

One tiny piece of good news is that this current bill gets rid of one of the EV fees (the $75 "electrification fee"). But yeah, 3.5c/mi doesn't seem reasonable.

Anyone have an odometer rollback hack?

This law is heavily flawed in terms of rate and pushes away from basically all EVs and most hybrids.

The state has no infrastructure for how this is reported or paid. Am I to go to the DMV every year and have my odometer read? Do I only pay tax on miles driven in Washington or is Washington going to tax apply an interstate tax? I mostly drive in Oregon where I already enjoy a lovely income tax that pays for services that I can not use and do not have access to. Now I will pay road maintenance in Washington for roads I don't drive on at a higher rate than a Hummer towing a 12000 lbs trailer.

They must think that EV owners can afford the extra tax....in fact...most probably can.

When a Washington State Rep tried to introduce a bill last year that tried a large increase on the EV fee he actually had the nerve to say that it was OK because EV owners could afford it.

Either it's a public good, or it's a fee. Either way, road fees for EV drivers shouldn't be different to those for gasoline vehicles.

I assume that dumb legislation like this is either an expected failure designed purely for political image, or it's a negotiating tactic to make the actual cost look like a reduction.
