School of the Hidden Vins

If you are have a new Tesla order, this post describes how the process works.

1. Make the order, and pay the deposit

2. Install the Chrome extension Hidden vin finder
Tesla VIN finder

A vin number is hidden in the source code. This means your order has been attached to a car. This can take many weeks to appear.

3. Check the Manage page in your Tesla account for a hidden vin using the extension. You can also find it manually by checking for 5yj3 in the source code

4. Now you have your hidden vin, Track your car by checking with Vedaprime’s free service

5. Check your ship status

6. After the car arrives in the country, receive a call from Tesla delivery specialist or email or both. Return rego papers, or deliver custom plates to Tesla

7. Receive your invoice and pay

8. Receive your delivery call

9. Collect/Receive your car

This list is not necessarily in order. Some people never receive a hidden vin, some people never get a specialist call, some receive a delivery call, invoice, papers all in one go.

Once your car arrives in the country, it takes on overage 2.5 weeks-3.5 weeks (east coast) for the cars to be delivered - provided the car has no significant issues. Some people have received cars 9 days after arrival, some 6 weeks or more after arrival.

The next cars will be built the beginning of the next quarter.

The goal will be to deliver all cars before the end of the quarter.

@Vedaprime, I would add between 8 & 9 that you may want to wait for the SMS the day before the delivery day that you have to answer YES to confirm the delivery appointment. The first date in 8. is still tentative until the day before. This happened to me. I was supposed to get the car on Sat Dec 14th at 2PM. Melbourne Delivery called me past 5pm on Friday that the service department needed more time on the car. So it was postponed till Tue Dec 17th at 2:30PM. On Monday, I received this SMS that everything was set, I would have to answer YES. then the date was final.

I ordered a model 3 end of Dec. Logged in today to Tesla website account page and checked source code but couldn't find one. Anyone knows how long Tesla takes to assign a car to order? or what next steps are after ordering? the status says "prepare for delivery" for last 3 weeks and all circles are ticked upto payment method - no calls, sms after order.

I'm in the same boat, ordered 1st December, no contact yet just waiting. I've signed up to Veda Prime's VIN tracking but just need a VIN to track now. Hopefully with the cars being built at the moment we'll start getting some VIN's coming up

My vin was issued the day I took delivery mid September and it was all to do with how containers were unloaded

It's different to a hidden vin.

the hidden vins can appear anytime from about the 10 Jan for weeks after. The chrome extension helps a little, otherwise search for 5yj3 in the source code of the My Manage page of your Tesla account.

not yet. It will depend on the production schedule. They do batches in single motor, and dual motor production runs. White seats will almost certainly be on later ships. I do know Korean bound dual motors have been built.

The first ship London Express is being loaded now in Oakland (Seoul Express no longer coming and has been pulled).

Auckland Feb 10, Sydney Feb 14 arrival.

Last quarter the hidden vins appeared any time from being packed into the container though to Sydney arrival. Most appeared after leaving New Zealand.

The cars are built in batches. So your car will be matched to the actual production of your variant. It could be on any 1 of 5 weekly ships. This is why we track vins- to work out the ship, and then delivery date range can be determined. White seats are typically built later in the quarterly cycle.

Hi Veda,
Tesla Australia seems to be playing funny buggers with getting cars from Sydney to Melbourne.
My car has been off the ship since the 20th of December and still not in transit from Sydney. I found the hidden VIN but the delivery team are not being helpful at all. I suspect that they are waiting for the next shipment to arrive to make for a full truck load.
Is this typical behavior?

I got a VIN and delivery confirmation for next week!
My account still shows no vin
