What does it mean when clear bra can 'self-heal'?

In the years since self-healing paint protection film was released there has been some level of confusion as to what self-healing technology really is. Some think self-healing means that any defects that could occur to the film will be repaired via the self-healing abilities. For a while I was skeptical as to if there was even any truth to self-healing technology. No doubt, others may feel the same... This begs the question, what is self-healing paint protection film technology and does it really work?
Self-healing paint protection film technology describes an ability for clear bra's topcoat layer to mend itself when washing marks, swirl marks or other light scratches are introduced into the surface of the film. Xpel Ultimate's top coat is .5 mils (12.7 microns). While relatively thick, the topcoat does have a limit to its ability to self-heal. If defects penetrate the topcoat it will not be able to mend itself. The technology was designed to address typical washing marks, swirl marks and light scratches, not rock chips or chemical etching. Chemical etching would be defects created by bug marks, bird droppings, solvent burn or other chemicals that "burn" the topcoat.
The self-healing technology works over time but can be accelerated with heat. Even in cold weather self-healing paint protection film can mend itself.
How does self-healing film benefit an owner?
For some car owners a full clear bra wrap gives an ease of maintenance due to the protective nature and self-healing nature of clear bra films. We have a client who owns a limo service that uses a Tesla Model S. It gets washed twice per day with brushes. While we can not recommend doing this, it is a necessity for them and they marvel at how fantastic the paint still looks. For others that are....more particular
a clear bra wrap will allow them to thrive in their OCD nature and actually keep the car up to their high standard.

This is a video we produced some time ago to demonstrate how self-healing paint protection film works. After installing a full hood section of clear bra, we noticed a factory defect in the topcoat. Instead of just scrapping the film and reinstalling, we took the opportunity to scratch it up with a stainless steel pick and then we replaced the film. Enjoy watching self-healing clear bra at work!
