The only real issue with "model year" nowadays is in how it affects valuation. If you're looking for a used 2019 car, the blue-book value would be the same for one made in January (18 months old) as for one made in December (6 months old).

It's the same problem for thoroughbred horses. If one is born on Dec 31, then on Jan 1 it is considered to be 1 year old, even though it was literally born yesterday. Coincidentally, there are a large number of horses with Jan 1 birthdays (wink, wink).
