image.jpeg image.jpeg Now that Technopile has nailed down some convenient charging in Geraldton its time to head to Shark Bay and add the small but interesting locations of Denham and Monkey Mia to plugshare. Today we covered 730kms, its useful to have plenty of daylight hours but being able to pull into a location and plug straight in without having to locate a usable power outlet makes a big difference.
The first photo attached is the newly installed HPWC at Oceanwest in Geraldton, the owners are very pleased with Tesla's destination charger program. The second photo is the AEVA funded 32 amp socket located at the Billabong Homestead 232kms North of Geraldton ( shows up on maps as Meadow). A big thanks to Technopile for his persistance in getting both these charging locations sorted (by the way, I stole his photo as it is too dark for a decent shot at the moment!).
Early tomorrow morning its a short 180km drive into Shark Bay, hopefully some good photos to follow.

Across the water behind the signage is the island where Dirk Hartog first set foot on Australian soil 400 years ago ( 25th October 1616) to the right is the Ocean park Aquarium, now Australia's most Westerly plug share location, Shark Bay Western Australia 11 November 2016. image.jpg

Funny, wife just showed me one her friends Facebook pic of her friend sitting in the frunk of your car I think, at the Oceanwest destination charger.
Great work showing what is possible in the vast expanse of WA.

Hi Dakah3, the owners of Oceanwest Geraldton are very happy with the HPWCs provided by Tesla, looking forward to a few more all the way to Exmouth.

So what do you do with all your stuff when you empty the back of the car for glamping mode?

Day two complete, found car charging in 3 locations without any problems, no shortage of power in this region, whoever said "what happens when the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine" hasn't been to Shark Bay, it never stops here, still a bit too much diesel use though, battery storage will fix that soon enough. image.jpg Monkey Mia, this tourist park faces North-East, lots of marine life including the Dolphin discovery centre. image.jpg The early buildings in Denham were made from local shell. image.jpg Denham has an attractive foreshore although the afternoon breeze is relentless on occasions. image.jpg

Clothing and such in the Frunk, bits and peices on the floor behind front seats, spare tyre and esky goes outside car at night. Short trips are okay, longer trips require more clothing, towels and equipment that requires more re packing every morning, normally 10-12 days is my limit for being tidy, not sure how I'll go travelling for 6 weeks like you did Richard.

Day 3 complete, the longest distance beteen any 3 phase charging is now down to 232kms, there's plenty of other charging locations in between yet to be tested. Below is Denham at 6.00am. image.jpeg Watching the Cricket being played in Hobart whilst getting a charge. image.jpeg The Billabong Homestead 660 kms North of Perth, the owners have been very supportive with EV charging. image.jpeg

Fourth and final day complete, 1800kms driven, 7 charging locations used, some established, two new ones added to plugshare, some not suitable for plugshare yet, 4 new potential Tesla destination charger locations.
Below picture is something that is almost impossible but a tourist still managed it. image.jpg
If you need to find the best Coffee and Donuts in town just get a local to point the way. On later inspection we found the meter box in the background had two live 32amp 5 pin outlets. image.jpg
The young Emu's gave us an escort into Nanga Bay just over the hill.

Totally awesome BH. Great pics. I often refer to you guys when explaining to some non-believing wing nuts that ultra remote travel & circumnavigation is absolutely not a problem in a Tesla. I point them to these commentaries & pics but some people just don’t want to believe or believe it could only be done with a generator & fuel.

and, of course, there was the pioneering journeys the Marc did and even some of my early trips out on to the Darling Downs.
It would be interesting to see a list of places in Oz where a Tesla hasn't been.

Yes, the non-believing wing nut who will still say unless an EV can beat a McLaren F1 around Monaco over 78 laps, seating for 7 adults, tow a horse float and Jet ski's at the same time, cost less than $20,000, travel 1200kms on a single charge, recharge in less than 5 minutes, have the capability to induction charge on a gravel road at 130kmh and brew its own beer then it's just a novelty item.

I haven't heard of anyone driving Adelaide to Alice Springs yet, would love to see a Tesla photographed at Ayers Rock.

@alpal has it on his list and it is on mine too. My car should have arrived already but it looks like it will be January before I take any trips whatsoever!! I have to get rid of this job thing too.

Will you head down to Adelaide first so it's like an official Adelaide to Ayers adventure? While your getting a few medium trips under your belt ( getting used to how the range is affected by different conditions) it's a good opportunity to make some calls and check the condition of the 3 phase power outlets along the way, some will be dodgy and others only 4 pin, Technopile organized for 3 phase 5 pin outlets to be sent direct to WA locations that were happy to upgrade, the Australian Electric Vehicle Association WA branch were happy to cover costs, it's worth asking AEVA SA to help out.
once you get to a location and the manager/owner suddenly clicks that Electric cars could be good for business you can then drop the hint that Tesla had a destination charger program, that makes it easier for the next Tesla making that journey.
