The solution in this article was not to remove the battery but to place it in a pool of water.

Salvage yards are going to have to come up with a practical approach to dealing with this potential problem (and I'm not sure removing batteries is it). Fast forward 20 years from now and 50%+ of the cars in a salvage yard could be BEV's.
The title is misleading. "Salvage" cars are referred to in the context of registered cars with a branded title. Your context is cars in accidents that caused a fire that are then stored somewhere. The cars in auction or wrecking yards are not even considered salvaged in any context until they are purchased.
