Should I sell my Model S?

Did you finance with Tesla? You could potentially take advantage of the Tesla buy-back program and then put the proceeds towards the X. It has to be at least an average return on the car, won't have to mess with trying to sell it and you can simply keep it until that time (with low(er) miles!).

From what I've heard, if you trade in your Model S to Tesla, they use an equation thats rumored to be:
$1 per mile + $1,000 per month of ownership

so take my Model S as an example, i paid about $90K for it.
it has 21,000 miles on it, and I took delivery January 2013 (21 months ago)

$90K original price
-$21K mileage
-$21K time (months)

~$48K trade in for a Model X, and thats if it happened today.
In other words, I think you can do better with a private sale, than a trade in to Tesla.

the issue is, what would you drive for another year?
plus, I went through early adopter issues with the Model S , I think waiting a year or two, for Tesla to "get the issues" squared away would be prudent.

If you can afford to keep the Model S until the Model X comes out, then that is the best overall decision. Any time you buy or sell a car, there is a cost involved of both time and money. If owning the Model S is really a stretch for you in the first place, then you shouldn't buy the Model X.

That said, keep the Model S and enjoy it. Who knows, your work situation could change at any time and you may need the S again.

I don't think this is bad advice. Not that I think there will be many issues, but if you can wait, the SUV you get later will be better than the one you get at the start. We've seen many, many parts changes on the Model S (including things like A battery to D battery), and we've seen significant features like parking sensors and folding mirrors arrive later. What will those features be for Model X? For instance, if 'self drive' came in 2016, would you be annoyed you didn't have it on your 2015 Model X? That said, you'll miss out on the first year excitement of having a Model X. If you think the Model S attracts attention, wait until you see what happens the first time you open those falcon wing doors.

Chris, we are selling ours for a future Model X too, so I don't think your idea is out of line. Wife decided at the last minute that she'd like the X better...she works hard, and I think she deserves what she wants, but we'll only do it if we can sell the MS for what we paid (we just took delivery, and it has less than 100 miles on it, so its truly brand new). You never know...some people don't want to wait, so you might be able to recover a lot of your cost. Good luck. http://http://www.teslamotorsclub.c...new-loaded-model-s-less-than-100-miles-149576

Well, if you really want to sell it "at cost," you should probably discount it by $7,500, to account for the tax credit.
