So my wife parked at school and went in to get our daughter, came out to find another Mom apologetic that she had hit Model S. (Witness aid she had parked way too close hit the drivers side mirror and then realizing what she had done she backed out again and hit it back the other way. Pretty annoying, but at least the other driver fessed up and StateFarm came to look at it already this morning; it could have been much, much worse if she'd scraped all down the side bodywork.

Initial cost estimate ~$1,000-1,200 for mirror and arm, skullcap in Sig Red and paint armor

P.S. My wife was parked away from other cars as she always does, there were plenty of empty spots.

Yeah, what is the deal with that? I will often park way out away from everyone else only to come out and find another car snugged right up beside me with empty spots all around! I've even had my door "dinged" by the other driver in this scenario (fortunately, not on my Model S yet).

I hate to be "that guy" that parks on an angle across two spots, but I sure get why people do that!

I so hear you. That's something that happens to me frequently as well. And with the Model S being quite wide it's even worse...
Nigel: any damage to the attachment point? The arm could put quite some levered force onto that...

No, that looks OK. Insurance assessment came out at $1,092. Tampa Service has the parts on order for me and hopefully we'll get it fixed soon.

is there anything cheap on this car? you can't even fart in it without causing $29999 in cloth stank damage.

So sorry to hear about you mirror, Nigel. The only consolation is that it's an easy fix and doesn't require weeks or months in the body shop as others have done in this forum.

Final total cost was $1,200 and change. Rangers showed up this morning and it's been replaced.

They proactively replaced the 12V (although I've never had a problem with it) and did some preventative maintenance on the pano roof slider as well as adding some squeak prevention (felt tape) to the center crossbar (although I never had any squeaks). Nice that they always top up the washer fluid and check tire pressures as a standard service during every visit.

Great, friendly service from the Tampa guys as always!

I think its safe to say the retrofit for automatic folding side mirrors won't be $250.

I think its safe to say that with the retrofit for automatic folding side mirrors a similar accident won't be a mere $1,200.

Ouch ... I damaged my side mirror in my 09 Accord pulling out of the garage once. Cost me $58 in parts and did the repair myself. Going to be a lot more careful pulling my future Model X out of the garage!

Yup, don't forget that was the cost for replacing one standard mirror.
