Sitting at Prepare To Order

On 3/7/20 I placed my order for a Red LR MY AWD 5 Seater Black Interior 19” Gemini non performance non FSD

I am located in Southern California.

Within two hour of ordering my status page reflected a changed of “Prepare for Delivery”. There is no option to upload anything.

My question is, how long should I expect to sit on this status in your experience? My neighbor received his M3 within 3 weeks of his status change of “prepare for delivery “. Was this possible just a glitch that changed all MY order pages to “prepare”?

The salesman at our local Tesla shop said that Tesla only delivers to Southern California the last month of each quarter. He told me if I placed an order for the model 3 by March 20th I would definitely take ownership by the end of the month.... but that if I order the MY it can be anytime from now until end of quarter 4.

It doesn't feel like there is enough information to answer the original question in a meaningful way. There are so many factors we don't now.

Higher Spec Level first: It seems like the higher end spec'd Performance and AWD orders have been seen on trucks, and that would be consistent with the order of delivery in the past. I.e. With upgraded wheels and such.

FSD Ordered: In addition, it seems, based on Posts I've seen so far that the folks furthers along in the online purchasing/information gathering/funding process, are also the ones with upper level spec's cars and FSD. It makes sense that those are what Tesla would focus on first. What we don't know though is how many of those Performance and AWD cars with upgraded wheels and FSD Tesla has lined up, to be filled first, before they start moving to lower revenue generating MYs.

Location: And even after all of this sorting and prioritization Tesla does to queue up deliveries... there is what appears to be some round-robin style delivery strategy based on locales it seems, where they batch deliveries to optimize transportation by area, and kind of take a circuit around the country delivering batches with one (or a few) areas at a time before moving to the next area(s).

Rinse, and Repeat. So anybody's guess on where & when any given order will be completed.

Feb 27, red, black, 19", AWD, FSD. None of that was decided when the advisor told me Q4 the previous day when I test drove the Model 3.

I'd love a May delivery. I have a collectable car to sell first (nearly new condition 2004 Thinderbird). I'd prefer to list the car when the weather warms up and the stock market recovers.

Just spitballing, but I think the adviser was trying to get you to buy a Model 3, which they could get this quarter for sure.
Tesla famously "downsells" the 3 and Y (relative to S/X).

When you say advisor, are you referring to the sales person at the showroom?? We've found out they are not given much information on new models. I spoke to one tonight and he said it's all managed by the system and a delivery specialist which isn't at that location. They only coordinate locally once the new vehicles arrive.

This could change once fully released. He did say they have a lot more information on Model 3 orders.

Yes, the man at the showroom. He was very friendly and knowledgable. I went there trying to emotionally prepare for the much higher cost S or X. I was so glad that both my wife and I preferred the Model 3.

My daily driver pickup truck is much, much bigger than the Model 3 (83" longer, 23" wider, 25" taller, and 5900# heavier). Naturally, the Model Y will still feel tiny for a while, but the 3 and S just sit way too low for me. The S cockpit felt cramped with the screen invading my right knee room.

My wife didn't like the Model X doors and neither of us liked the price. I'm looking forward to downsizing my daily driver and the FSD features. We also have a Pacifica hybrid that runs about 75% of its miles on electric. I really prefer the driving experience of an electric powertrain.
