I am on the fence as well... Having taken the following on a test drive (85D, P 85D, P100D, Model 3 RWD, and the P3D), I was concerned about the 0-30 acceleration in the Dual Motor. The 3 RWD just felt so sluggish off the line. It was a let down.. The P3D was just insane... Was hoping the dual motor would be in between, but... looking at reviews and watching the video, it appears the Dual Motor is not much snappier from 0-30.Over the weekend, went to test drive a Model 3. They only had a RWD LR available, so took that out. I've test drove the P85D in the past, which had the greatest acceleration I've ever experienced in a car. So I assumed I would have something similar, albeit not as powerful as the P85D. But I have to say, I was slightly disappointed with the dead stop acceleration. Coming from a Audi S4, it felt a bit like coming off of 2nd gear (yes, a bit of an exaggeration) rather than the instant on torque I come to appreciate in EV. The Tesla Rep said this was because its a RWD, and the AWD should have a better take off. Of course, as I hit 20MPH, the juice kicked in and felt great.
But this 0-20 issue is a concern, since I am going to put down a final deposit on a AWD Model 3, but now strongly considering a P3D to guarantee the instant on torque from dead stop.
However, since I wasn't able to test drive a P3D, I'm wondering if those of you who have, did you experience the instant on dead stop acceleration or the slight sluggish start prior to the torque kicking in?
I've driven the rwd and AWD 3. I would not bet on the AWD satisfying people looking for additional power. It has some of course, but the difference is not night and day.
*Take delivery of p3d- tomorrow
Depends on your type of driving.
If it's mostly highway passing speeds, well, ~10mph faster at the end of 1/4 mile is pretty night/day between RWD and AWD... especially given the P is less than 1/3rd that much faster than the AWD at that point.... north of ~60 the P and AWD seem basically identical- finishing with exactly the same time difference they were apart AT 60...
If it's all stoplight to stoplight racing especially 0-30 that's where the P really shines over both- though numerous folks who've driven RWD and AWD say the AWD is still noticeably quicker than the RWD.
Already had it for a week. And absolutely love every minute of it. So glad I chose the P.I am on the fence as well... Chill Cars did a great video... RWD vs AWD... at the end of the 1/4 mile, the AWD was 10mph faster...
The AWD vs P3D... Huge difference...
When do you get your P3D?
That's what I did after test driving the P. I went from an AWD order to the P. Still waiting. They have the car ready to ship/deliver, but no one can confirm if my referral was applied. No written confirmation from Tesla, then I'm not ACHing any money. Simple as that. I've read to many threads about people who upgraded to the P, using a referral, and then still getting charged for Supercharging, and no indication that the wall charger was being sent. Thanks all for the comments...
I wish Tesla had the AWD available for a test drive...
But...
The RWD was sluggish from 0-30...
The P3D was insane...
Would be great to know what the AWD felt like...
Watching videos and hearing people say the AWD was not as sluggish as the RWD, makes me lean toward the P3D...

They want me to do it this week, but no confirmation of my referral code, then no delivery or transfer of funds.wow.. I am surprised to hear that.
When do you take delivery of your 3PD?
And... Glad to know that I am not alone regarding the performance vs the awd...
I am definitely considering upgrading...

All they’ve done is call, text, and email both me and my wife to ACH the money. Each new person I ask to confirm that my referral code has been applied then goes 100% radio silent. I get them Las Vegas and Fremont. I expect someone different again tomorrow.
The funny thing is that I did exactly what Tesla wanted by offering free Supercharging, and in my case a free wall charger since I’m using my own referral code. I pulled the trigger and changed from AWD to P3D with PUP. About a $15K bump.
All I want is written confirmation on an order sheet that it has been applied. Not asking much.
Other than that the P3D is way more fun than the LR. Since I have an S85 no. I want more punch. The P3D has it.
Thanks Ronin...Already had it for a week. And absolutely love every minute of it. So glad I chose the P.
I'm still waiting for mine to be applied... only thing I got was the email from Tesla saying I was getting free supercharging since I ordered prior to the cutoff.Question for anyone that successfully added free supercharging to a P3D order:
Did your purchase agreement / order sheet mention free supercharging?
So I get your point, I waffled back and forth over the course of a month between AWD and RWD. I live in Austin, there's no snow/ice here (if there is, it's like once every 4 years) and AWD is totally unnecessary. The cost was a factor, basically. While I could afford the extra money for AWD (And the white interior of course), it was hard to justify, especially when I think that when it comes time to sell it, I bet most buyers here won't value AWD over RWD at all. I kinda regret not getting AWD, but at least my monthly payments will be fairly significantly lower, I guess...I agree that power at speed in the AWD seemed pretty good and better than the RWD. I personally wouldn't consider a RWD if I was buying new today. AWD or P. But, if I currently owned a RWD and didn't live in a bad climate, I wouldn't bother upgrading to AWD.
I never got to test drive an AWD and just had to interpret what others were saying about it, which is that 0-30 felt kind of like the RWD, but started to cook after 30. Well, I have that in my S85 and I wanted more of what I felt when I've had P85 loaners, and of course driving the P3D.I hear you and have to agree, at the least you should have confirmation of free supercharging. It appears that the support / training from Tesla has weakened considerably with their massive growth of the Model 3...
Last night I decided to just to place a new order using my referral code, because when i tried to just do the upgrade, it was nowhere on the page to upgrade.. When I placed the new order, on my confirmation page, it showed the free supercharging, however on my new rental agreement, and on the page there is no confirmation of the free supercharging... I should have taken a screen shot of my new order. Yes, I am in no hurry to have the car, just need it before the years end to apply the tax credit. And... I will cancel one of my orders
Perhaps, because I do not see the supercharging on my order should give us hope?
Hopefully, Tesla will do the right thing and honor the supercharging...
Thank you also for letting me know about your experience...
I can't remember.. Did you test the AWD?
Enjoy your new P3D...
Looking forward to seeing your pics and hearing about your experience!
