If you have paired the ring (or for that matter, a regular key card) with the car, then the only problem that you can have locking or unlocking the car is how you are presenting the ring to the car's sensors.

Also keep in mind that the NFC is powered by the sensor and is sensitive to the antenna size (a loop by design), in a card, it's placed around the entire perimeter of the card, so that creates a large, flat contact area. I'd assume in a ring it's looped around the ring itself, so it's much smaller, and you're using an edge (so it's much more sensitive to the positioning on the sensor).
