Also interesting: Alongside some beautiful Roadsters, a Mercedes (e-class?) ev was charging outside.

Hmm, isn't the charge port on the wrong side then? Unless that's just where it was for the mule.

This shot at full-resolution is fantastic (I can't stress enough how much it helps to view it at full resolution).

I would like the production vehicles to have that red accent line (and possible LED indicators) on the rear-view mirrors.

Yes, that white one just came back from a long stay at the Autodesk design museum. It is just a body model, with a dummy interior.

(I think they have more recently tinted all the windows so it is harder to see the inside anymore.)

I wouldn't say top secret. We knew they had CLS drivetrain mules around. Smart to leave the exhaust tips on, though.

I noticed that those tips are marked, signs that it was a gasser for some time before the upgrade. Not a from-the-factory sans oily bits deal.

It passed a smog check in 2008, so it was definitely a 'gasser' for some time before getting the Tesla treatment.
I wonder if Tesla was 'benchmarking' it then, or they just bought it used and got out the 'sawzall'...?
My guess is that they bought it used to do the conversion.

Post-hoc analysis, but a Google search for "California license plate smog check" turns up Vehicle Test History, enter the plate number from the pic, ta-da.
