For any tax buffs out there.

Can the money spent on the software updates (autopilot) be deducted as a software business expense?

Are you using the car to conduct your business?

You mean the cost to activate Autopilot, after you have already taken delivery of the vehicle? That's an interesting question. I am not an accountant or tax expert, but my thoughts are that it could only be a deduction if using Autopilot is a legitimate expense business function. What business function does Autopilot serve you, that the car itself doesn't?

It depends on if you are going to deduce your vehicle based on actual costs or mileage.

I am thinking with Teslas, you want to go with the actual cost model.

We will likely be taking the advanced depreciation as the vehicle probably wont be driven more than 10k miles per year.
Usage includes transportation to meetings & temporary work locations, transporting company employees and other business usage.

My business will also build apps and tooling around the Tesla API....
