IMHO the Rheem heat pump water heater is far and away the best choice. AND... AND ~70% of the energy it uses to heat water is technically solar. ~100% if you count the energy from your PV I bet there's tons of rebates in SF for installing one.

Heats coming from somewhere... probably the sun

You can duct the RHEEM. You can have it installed to pull hot air from the attic.

No attic! Flat roof. No crawl space. Large overhangs to keep heat out in summer...
