I was reading this article - IMF Survey : Counting the Cost of Energy Subsidies
This figure is particularly interesting.
"Subsidies are projected to remain high, despite sharp declines in international energy prices. The estimate for 2015 is US$5.3 trillion (6.5 percent of global GDP). "
That is $168,000 per second!
Which is enough money to put solar panels on 1.5 million homes everyday.
Given that there are 74.5 million households in the United States...
So,
The fossil fuel subsidies can pay for putting solar on every single home in the United States, for free, in less than two months.
Why are we not doing this? Mind boggling.
