I'm a long time SXM user (since 2006) and know the MY doesn't offer that feature. What does Tesla offer to replace SXM? I'm thinking of getting the SXM app for my phone and just BT stream my music but I'm interested in what Tesla offers in lieu of SXM.

Thanks in advance.

I miss satellite radio a bit... the options aren't as good. I do the streaming through my phone now but it's definitely not as easy to change channels.

They have some streaming music choices in the car but nothing quite like Sirius XM for ease of tuning or variety of programming.

When I had XM radio, usually free for a year with a new car, I was very disappointed about the fact that their music playlists were very limited, and you would hear the same music over and over again. I never thought it was worth paying anywhere near their regular rates. Slacker/Spotify/Pandora is way better and costs a fraction.

I never listened to the non-music channels though.

Spotify blows away SiriusXM in terms of selection, sound quality and integration within the Tesla software. I was also being stubborn when I first got my Y and wouldn't sign up for Spotify Premium. I was using the free Slacker streaming on the Tesla and has found several stations that I liked. However, I realized that Slacker plays a lot of the same songs over and over. Since switching to Spotify Premium and getting my artists, playlists, podcasts and other favorites programmed, the music options are pretty overwhelming. The only thing I miss from SiriusXM is the Howard Stern Show, but other than that, Spotify blows it away.

$10 a month...

I love the variety on Spotify, but the best part is the sound quality in the Model Y. It's absolutely incredible and I notice a huge difference in quality from Slacker or Bluetooth from my phone. I listen to a lot of hip hop and electronic music and the bass sounds ridiculous with Spotify.

I have several pay-for Music Streaming subscriptions going concurrently. When I'm not driving my Model Y, I'm a bit of a tech/gadget/AV/home theater enthusiast... I added a Spotify Premium subscription to my arsenal when I took delivery on my Model Y two weeks ago. So far so good. I like it a lot. Just one question, and then a comment:

First the question - I listen to a lot of podcasts when driving (I'm spoiled by better sound quality options for music when I'm at home). Spotify seems to be a pretty solid Podcast player. I like it better than what I'd been using. But, are you getting Podcast support within the Spotify player on the car (not just via the Spotify app on your phone over bluetooth)? If so, can you elaborate a bit on how? I'm not seeing that option, and I'm playing the podcasts via the phone (over bluetooth to the car). Whereas I have successfully found ways to "follow" artists and add playlists such that I can play those back via the Model Y without using the phone and relying on (unreliable) bluetooth...

Then the comment - I am really liking Spotify so far. This is a nice service. But, it sure would be nice if we the consumers/owners had more choices available to us on services that would integrate directly without having to use our phones and bluetooth connections. For me specifically, if the car supported either Tidal or Qobuz natively, I probably would not have signed up for Spotify, and saved myself the $15/month recurring fee...

Can't you just search from the "Any Music" tab on the bottom right of the app for the podcast you want to listen to? I don't listen to a ton of podcasts, but I'm pretty sure you can do that within the app.

I'm in agreement with you on your comment. I'm also a subscriber to Apple Music as we have a family sharing plan. I find it strange that I can only stream a music service like this from my phone which must be very popular among other Tesla owners.

I had my Y for a week before it went to the SC for post delivery issues and I learned three things:

1. Tesla won’t play Apple Lossless encoded music. I partitioned my Samsung T7 (350 GB for TeslaCam and 150GB for my iTunes library), over 450 CD’s and I get an Error Loading message. So I have to dumb them down to MP3’s and then recopy them to my SSD.

2. The free Slacker streaming music is actually pretty nice, once you go into the Genre category and then drill on the available categories I found a great selection of channels like 60’s, 70’s, Beatles, Soft Rock and yes even Yacht Rock radio and it sounds fabulous.

3. I can use my SXM phone app to BT stream to the Y and it sounds fabulous as well. Not like many cars who’s BT streaming audio quality sucks. It really sounds awesome, but the secret is to go into the settings and change the audio quality setting to HIGH. If you have unlimited data no harm.

So all in all I’m loving the Tesla audio system. Now after 8 days all I need in my car back.

Nice tip, and I think it at least *sort of* worked. I think it played the podcast I searched for via Slacker and not Spotify? Which, it still played... I'd rather have one consolidated player (Spotify or other) tracking my listening status and marking "complete" for all of my podcasts. But it worked. I didn't know about that. I'll need to futz with it a little bit more. But thanks for the tip!

Nope. You could have encoded them to lossless .FLAC which Tesla will happily play.

Realistically, especially in a car, it’s darn near impossible to distinguish between 256kbps AAC (e.g., what you get off the iTunes store) and a lossless format for just about any material, and 256kbps AAC is better than 320kbps MP3. If I’m ripping a CD, I have all of the tools necessary to do an AccurateRip to FLAC for my music server, then a transcode to 256kbps AAC for my phone. But I have no qualms about getting stuff directly off the iTunes Store either, especially the “Mastered for iTunes” stuff; as I said, trying to tell the difference between that format and a lossless format is generally a fool’s errand.

Perhaps, but I was merely answering the assertion that one must "dumb down" CD rips to .mp3.
