I think it actually is an sales tax exemption only on the first $25,000 selling price of the vehicle. If you go to Incentive programs | Washington Department of Revenue and click on “Clean alternative fuel and plug-in hybrid vehicles - sales/use tax exemption“ you’ll see that the exemption applies to up to $25,000 of the sales price. Your $2500 value is correct because the sales tax rate in Bellevue on vehicles is about 10%, and $25,000 of the total cost of the vehicle being taxed at 10% would be $2,500 exemption.

I haven’t got mine figured out... I’m calling them again since they’ve had a few hours and still haven’t provided it.

I have to have this done first before delivery. They will NOT ship the car until full payment is made (financed amount and down payment). My credit union won’t release funds until they see a sales agreement from a Tesla...

You're right, I was wrong. It is the first 25k. I got so used to seeing the $2500 value that I forgot the details behind it.

But hey, you're charged less tax overall!

Yep! I'm still trying to get mine applied... apparently the document guys are working on it *RIGHT NOW*. Somehow I suspect it'll take all day and another call from me and then my credit union will be closed for the day :(

Ah ha! More information trickles out...

MVPA are NOT generated locally to the stores. They are created at some corporate contracts department somewhere. So when I was told by the University Village store that it'll just take a couple hours, in all honesty they probably had no idea. When I called back and they said "we just got to it and are working on it now" that really had zero fact behind it because it's off in line at some corporate location. I called the Westlake Store and found all this out. They couldn't tell me anything other then the request had been put in today at 9:30am (wonder what happened to my request yesterday at 1pm???) and they (the local store) couldn't do anything really... except he would "poke at it" and flag it as high priority. He noticed my car had just been sitting in Seattle and is just waiting for me, so he understood that I wanted to move things along.

Any bets on how many days this will take? Any bets on if it'll be the incorrect amount the first time around?

I’m gonna be in the exact same situation when I get back from my vacation next week. Hopefully they have a better handle on things by then

Another tip for you, be super super clear about how you want the break down (between down payment and financed amount) to be, in every communication.

They actually were able to push it through a little faster.... I requested it at 9:30am today, got the updated MVPA at about 3:35pm... however, of course it was wrong. The tax exemption amount is correct, but I was going to make a $2500 down payment, which of course changed to $247 down payment after that exemption was applied. He's how it's been explained to me. They can't break things out as Deposit, down payment, financed amount. Instead they will dump into the system what the financed amount is that you're requesting, THEN the system will calculate if you still owe a down payment (because of course you already put that deposited amount down when you placed your order).

SO.... when the tax exemption applies the lowers the total amount of the car but the financed amount remains fixed with the difference reflecting in the down payment amount.

I recommend this...
Go to this page; WA State Licensing (DOL) Official Site: Use tax for vehicles and boats There is a link for use tax which will give you every city in WA and what the tax rate is (it shows state tax [6.5%] and local tax). Now add 0.3% (which is an additional vehicle use tax for WA) to that amount. Now the exemption is good for $25,000 of the vehicle price. So 25,000 multiplied by that tax rate and that will tell you how much your exemption will be.

Example if picking up from the Bellevue Tesla location.
Bellevue vehicle sales tax: 6.5% state, 3.5% local, 0.3% additional vehicle use; total 10.3% tax.
$25,000 * 0.103 = $2575 exemption amount

Calculate your total vehicle price + destination fee ($1200)
(Example with plain SR+ with no options; $38,990 + $1200 = $40,190 (this is the amount that will be taxed)
Calculate tax due
(Example; $40,190 * 0.103 = $4139.57 - $2575 exemption = $1564.57)
Calculate total cost due
(Example; $40,190 [car] + 1,564.57 [remaining tax] + $125.75 [registration/title/transfer fee, verify amount with Tesla] = $41,880.32)

You now have the cost of the car ($41,880.32) but you've already paid $2500 as a deposit when you ordered it. So the amount due is $39,380.32. If you want to put a deposit down to reduce how much you finance, minus it from this value, say $2500, and you'll get the amount to tell Tesla you're going to finance. $36,880.32. Tesla will plug in the finance amount into their system, and everything else will calculate off of that. Otherwise you'll have to go back and forth with Tesla once the sales tax exemption is applied because 99% sure it'll just reduce your down payment, NOT your financed amount.

And of course, this is going to be too late for my credit union (since I'm STILL waiting). It's taken Tesla all day to generate ONE document. Still feels less painful then a car dealership since I've been at work all day just doing this periodically via email, but wow this could be streamlined a lot more...

I would go ahead and call them now and ask that they review your MVPA and make sure it's updated to reflect the tax exemption, just in case it takes a few days for yours.

Holy crap man, this is very thorough. Much appreciated! It seems silly to have to do all this calculation ourselves but beats sitting at home twiddling thumbs while the car is just at the dealership.

So, whats the latest update? lol

So, whats the latest update? lol

It took 13 MVPA to be generated, but finally it was correct. Tesla does NOT generate the MVPA at the stores, they're done by corporate somewhere and then emailed back, so if you call a store and someone says, "oh ya, we just pulled that up and are working on it now" there's a good chance that's complete crap and they have no idea of someone is actively looking at it. I would call back every 2 hours or so and ask for an update. (At least for WA residence)

For me the tax exemption applied to ALL tax (state amount. additional vehicle use amount, and local amount) on the first $25,000 of the total vehicle price. Since I'm doing delivery at my home address, my local tax rate applied. My local rate is a combined 8.9% and as calculated my sales tax on the MVPA decreased by $2,225 ($25k * 0.089). You won't see a credit or separate line item on the agreement but instead the total tax will be lower and that's how you "see" the exemption. This took two days (one day passively where I only called once mid day and the second day I called as soon as the Tesla store opened, at lunch, and then again around 3pm) and I still got it at 4:40pm in the day, too late for my credit union to do anything.

A word of warning, if you've told Tesla you plan to finance $35,000 and any remaining amount will be your down payment, the finance amount will NOT change with the sales tax exemption being applied. Instead, if that remaining amount was $2,500 and the exemption was worth $2,225 then you'll see your down payment reduced down to $275 and the finance amount remain the same. In order to keep that down payment the same and instead lower the finance amount you need to kinda figure it out on your own first and then tell Tesla the finance amount. Your down payment amount will be larger then you expect until the exemption is applied, then that remaining customer down payment amount will balance out.

Also... make sure to tell you credit union/bank/3rd party financing about the tax exemption. Once all my documents went off to my credit union they emailed back midway into the process to say the tax amount didn't look right and they would have one of their finance guys look over it to see if something was calculated wrong on Tesla's side. Thankfully I caught the email and quickly emailed back with a breakdown of why the tax was so low and a link to the WA EV Sales tax credit. They went back to processing like normal and thanked me for letting them know!

I made my extra $2500 down payment via myTesla and ACH on Wednesday. My credit union completed everything and emailed my docs for signatures yesterday and sent the check overnight to Tesla. Tracking info shows it was delivered less then an hour ago. My home delivery specialist (who was out on short notice medical issue) is back in the office today and as soon as the check processes they'll start looking for/organizing vehicle transport to my house. I'm about 220 miles away and the car is already sitting there ready for me... so I'm hoping setting up the transport only takes a day or two and maybe I'll have my car by Wednesday of next week... though I've been told officially they say 8 to 10 days (but even then they said it's often faster).

Edit: I've updated my Progressive insurance to start to cover my Tesla on Wednesday of next week. I have my Abstract Ocean order submitted for some interior protection items. I got my Tesla floor mats and wireless charger. My NEMA 14-50 was installed. I literally just need the car :p

Haha, I was wiring my 14-50 and had the adapter ordered a week before I took delivery as well!

Charging at 32 amps (32 miles per hour it says) is really nice. Most days I used somewhere around 40-50 miles of range and plug it in anyway. You never know when social life will drop an opportunity in your lap where you'll drive way more than you originally planned. :)

Need to sand that first round of mud and hit it one more time so it looks more professional, but whatever.

Good luck on delivery next week!

It'll be so nice charging fast! I don't drive that much day to day, probably only about 10 miles and maybe 25 on the weekends, but coming from a Chevy Volt that in the winter only got about 30 miles of range before the gas engine kicked in, AND I was only charging it on a standard outlet at 12 amps, this is going to feel like a personal super charger ;)

Do you have any recommendations on the front plate? I'm tempted to run completely without one but would like to have a solution in the trunk or something with the plate, just in case I find myself heading over to Seattle or something where they might crack down a little more. I've seen a couple that are "non-contact" in the sense they hold the plate away from the front bumper a little and don't touch the paint... but I'm not sure which is easier to install, most stable, and if there is any issue with AP sensors, etc.

hi all...wondering if anyone on here from vancouver, bc has taken delivery in the last few days? i've heard the west 4th delivery centre is very backed up. i ordered on july 30th and then a few days ago changed to an inventory model 3...which is currently in vancouver. do they still arrange delivery based on the order date even if it's an inventory car? i made the change over the phone and the person helping me gave me the vin number...account has been updated but the vin number is still not showing up on the account. I'm just being impatient...waited a long time for this car!
