Im looking at putting some nice aftermarket tires/wheels on my Model Y. was going to put 20x9.5" in the front and 20x10.5" in the rear. Are there any contraindications for doing this? Does anyone have any experience trying this?
Wider tires can significantly decrease your wh/mi leading to lower practical range. Just make sure you manage your own expectations in that regard. My own experience on my S was that it was around a 50% higher energy consumption to go up to a 10.5" wheel with a corresponding 295 series tire. Although in the interest of clarity, I also went up an inch in wheel diameter and that adds to angular momentum and could have added to the issue.
The stock Performance Y has both staggered wheels and tires. The only concern is making sure your overall diameter is as close to stock as possible. We had one customer go with a much taller rear diameter and the car began interfering with VSC/TCS because it thought the rear wheels were losing traction and spinning faster than the front.
