Well just got a text from the SC. Replacing the drive unit is all they said. So I have a standard S85. That original drive is obsolete...right? So they put a "better" one in? I gather it's one of the refurbs. Curious what part actually failed on it. I had the ranger ride with me and when I floor it most of the time there was a very low drone. Only when I floored it. He said that was normal..... My friends even questioned it when I demonstrated it to them. Thoughts?

Failure in the current monitoring circuitry for the inverter drive outputs. Inverter starts out open loop and then faults due to lack of feedback. (Wild guess)

Yep, one unit is the electronics and the motor (and gears/ differential).

I've seen no data to indicate a physical VIN number on either the pack or drive unit. It is just another part to Tesla vs a stamped and mated engine block. People tend to like cars with newer packs and DUs.

Yeah, I wasn't thrilled being stranded in the ghetto BUT the end result was a new/rebuilt drive for my old
2013 Tesla. I too feel this makes the car better and welcomed the upgrade to the newer drive.

Maybe in the year 2045. This really isn't an issue outside of collector cars.

Looks like drive unit replacement along with motor mount and maybe even the half shafts. You should be set for many miles to come.
(better scans would be nice, up to you)

I guess I got EXTREMELY lucky. My warranty expires in about 3k miles or May 2019. I just called CS and they said I cannot extend my warranty anymore..... Any comments on this too? Was thinking 3rd party like another TMC member has done if it's even possible.

3rd party warranty would be like insurance, they bet that your premiums would be more than the average claim payout. I'd check the exact terms and pricing. Is there any warranty related to the replacement parts?

Good question....I doubt no more than 90 days....I think these are refurb DU's.

In this case, since the original manufacturer doe the work, refurb should be as good as new (and better than the first n revisions)

You should get the newest Revision Q drive unit now. Follow up with your SC to make sure, but they've had several revisions and I believe that is the latest non-P version.
