I did a quick search and found Monterey County permit 18CP02080 which was applied for on August 15th with the description: The location is 48123 Highway 1 in Big Sur, which is the Ventana Big Sur Resort.
Did you find all these permits from the same source? 3 Superchargers in one day seems like a bit of a coincidence
Nice find! Thanks for posting. That location appears to be at Post Ranch or Ventana Big Sur, can’t tell which.
It was just dumb luck, really, as I only spent a few minutes searching. For this one I googled for Tesla within aca.accela.com, which is not as useful as it sounds but gets hits for a few places like Monterey County. I found the Corte Madera and San Ramon sites by googling for Tesla within the domain ca.us over the last year.
Tesla has no control over those sites - the information there is public record and municipalities post it to make it available.
Big Sur would be an interesting location to have an SC. Now sure how many they can do there since there are not a whole lot of places you can put it. It sure would make a trip there easier.
Good location for those of us pulling campers. If we want to camp in Big Sur without hookups, this gives us a place to charge and get back to civilization.
Pole pic flood 1 of 4: I started a spotting survey of existing roads, parking, and electrical utilities. I took a lot of pictures of such things. Hopefully the EXIF data is in the uploaded files showing GPS. I’ll upload the relevent pics in a couple of messages starting here. The permit appears to be incomplete because the website says it is still in processing (not yet approved); all sorts of things could change.
Pole pic flood 4 of 4: I stopped at a cafe behind a Shell station on the way back North, and to my taste, the black coffee was quite good. On the way back North, I saw around half a dozen Teslas coming South on California Highway 1 before I left the Big Sur area, mostly Model 3’s. I also posted pics of the Del Monte SC in that thread of yet more Teslas.
Apparently, the GPS info did not show up in my original posts above, so I'll edit the quotes of the above messages in-line with the GPS coordinates, which you can copy into most mapping software to find those locations and for which I conveniently put a URL to Google Maps to go direct to those coordinates (and I also prepend an image number I assigned for my record keeping which you can refer to in replies): The following additional images were inadvertantly skipped (pole pic flood 5 of 4): #5-01 121° 45' 39.63" W 36° 13' 36.198" N Google Maps #5-02 121° 45' 44.772" W 36° 13' 31.992" N Google Maps
Not a huge need for a Supercharger in big Sur, as it is easy to make it from Monterey/Seaside down to Atascadaro, however it is surely appreciated by those towing or wanting to run up and down the coast in an epic road trip. Thank you Tesla.
Don't forget they're also adding Superchargers in Cambria, just down the road from Hearst Castle (which incidentally has a number of free L2 charging points). The Superchargers down the coast can get pretty busy at times, and historically Highway 1 is subject to rockslides and road closures, so I'm glad Tesla is providing more options.
Interesting to see that while more and more EV charging options are opening up every day, so many of the neighborhood gas stations and those on the open stretches of highway are being shut down for environmental (leaks) or economic reasons. I love Cambria. This will give me a good excuse to stop there for the night on my way to SF.
Based on the address, looks like Ventana Big Sur, which currently has Tesla destination chargers. Post Ranch Inn has Tesla destination chargers too, but I'd be very surprised to see them add Superchargers (their upscale guests probably don't want to see or hear any additional traffic!).
Yeah this section of the PCH definitely needs a couple superchargers. I drove it on a weekend this summer and something like 5% of the cars on the road were Teslas. It was crazy. Having a supercharger here and in Cambria will give people flexibility in case of road closure or in case they are not driving the full length of the highway, but rather turning around at some point. It would be funny if they added one at the gas station in Gorda that charges over $7/gallon. I believe it is the most expensive gas station in the country.
