Supercharger - Clayton, NM

Clayton changes all the dynamics of getting between Trinidad and Amarillo.
We met the owner of the Ranch Market, Brian Moore an he is a super nice guy.
We took him for his FIRST Tesla ride in our Model Y and gave him the 75 cent tour of all of it’s features. He was very enthused and sent me an e-Mail about shopping for a Model X.
If anyone goes through Clayton in an X, you should invite him to take a close look at it.
Always pays to keep a positive relationship with the hosts of the Supercharger Station and we found him to be very receptive and his staff were all very friendly.

The Chicken Tortlla Soup they sell there is great.

Ranch Market is a well supplied mini supermarket! I was very pleased with their facilities and was happy to buy some fruits and snacks for our trip to Colorado! Thanks to Ranch Market for hosting Superchargers in a great location!

We came through the Clayton supercharger this last Monday and was surprised to see the condition of the parking stalls. Apparently there is no base to the asphalt because it is already sinking where wheels sit while charging. If it’s this bad already, I can imagine the condition it will be after a winter. I should have taken pictures. We will be back through there in about a week. I’ll try to remember to take some.

if it looks this bad after just a few months.... expect them having to tear it up and repave again - at least it will be a fairly high priority and not the "expected opening in Q1 XYZ" game.
They should probably due it in late September or October. After peak travel season but before it gets so cold that this one becomes super necessary even for long range models.

Clayton was a life saver compared to doing this trip before! Now I just have to watch that 80mph range degradation.

Denver to south Lubbock
----

Car said preconditioning when left home, seemed to happen earlier than before
Drove about 75 mph, cool-ish weather (30s and 40s)
Battery went down to 48 percent in CO Springs when stopped for charge
Charged to 90%. Pretty much exactly when it said we can go
Arrived in Trinidad at 29%. Said we could continue around 55%, so did a 15 minute charge.
It was ready to continue trip at 62%. It said we would arrive with 24% in Clayton
Charged to 69% and then left
Drove around 70-75 mph max to Clayton, arrived with 29% left
For next leg, it said to charge 20 minutes to around 70%, went over a bit. Charged to 75%
Drove 80mph almost all the way to Amarillo, with decent south winds, arrived with 9%. Car said it would be 20 percent
2 stalls at Amarillo out of order
ABRP said 90% in Amarillo was good, so did that, but forgot to account for going 80mph.
It said we’d arrive with 20.% Got here with 13%

I haven't driven that route (yet), but the results are very familiar to many trips I've taken in other places. That little bump in speed makes such a big difference. 9% arrival is certainly nothing to be concerned about, but a drop of 11% in predicted arrival shows how much difference increased speed makes.

Where do you charge in Lubbock?

still ???? months ago there were 2 stalls out in amarillo as well. Tesla *REALLY* needs to get their act together fixing existing SC's and not just building new ones. So many 8 stall / 6 stall installations i've seen with 2 stalls down and it becomes a big problem on a busy day

Someone's house, since that's my end destination.

This is exactly why Tesla builds 8 stall (or more) supercharger stations as a default instead of 2 or 4 stall ones like almost everyone else in the industry, because it means they can handle having a few down for a couple of months without it actually being a major problem. Unfortunate for them not to have been fixed before major travel days. In years past, there has usually been a concerted, network-wide surge of supercharger repair/maintenance in the lead up to Thanksgiving to prepare. But, from my following on the forum, I don't think we saw that this year.
