This is real progress! I had to take a longer route to Florida a couple of years ago. The next time, the new SC route will make it a snap!

Indeed. Finally, hundreds of miles each way will be saved, along with reduced risk of tornados, black ice, and sneaky elevation/temperature challenges.

Although now the weak link appears to be Fort Stockton... Hmmmm. Not sure what's up with that.

Looks like the golden spike celebration should be moved to Fort Stockton.

Tucson+Willcox+Deming allows a SuperCharged southern transcontinental route.

Ft Stockton is needed for an all I-10 route, of course. But even without Ft Stockton, the leg from Tucson to El Paso shaves hundreds of miles of travel off the southern route.

Maybe when Ft Stockton is done, there can be a Golden Rib (Texas BBQ) celebration!

Indeed. The Golden Spike has moved east to Fort Stockton now.

Plenty of room for multiple celebrations, of course. After a 3-year, largely incomprehensible delay, it’s nice to have the route nearly in hand.

Besides, there’s tasty Sonoran-style food in Arizona, delicious green chiles in New
Mexico, and all manner of grilled/smoked meat in Texas.

Perhaps Deming/Southern New Mexico, being midway, would like to co-host with the West Texas and Southern Arizona clubs once that final spike is done?

Fantastic food aside, I’m happy to finally not have to a) carry Autosocks and b) detour hundreds of miles *and into less safe conditions* just to get back and forth from Key West to Los Angeles.

Take a look time.

5R definitely gettin’ R moving along!

Photos.

Thanks for the update Tyl.... looks like it's moving right along. Maybe it will be open by Thanksgiving, I think I read someone on here is trying to make the trip across the southern route around then. Even w/o Ft Stockton, once Deming is on line, that saves at least a day travel time if you are trying to get to San Antonio and points east from Tucson and Points west. ( Used to have to go up to I-40 and then back down I 35 to San Antonio or I45 to Houston. A several hundred mile detour
