Supercharger - Erie, PA - Perry Highway

Found this new Supercharger site under construction on Perry Highway (State Rt 97) in Erie, PA. It is at a Sheetz gas/charge station located just south of I-90. This will be the second Supercharger in the Erie area, the other is a V2 located one exit farther west on I-90. This new location is in a less busy area and will not normally have any appreciable traffic congestion.

Sheetz
8180 PERRY HIGHWAY
ERIE, PA 16509
Store #499

There are (8) eight V3 stalls located on the north side of the building. Oddly, for me anyway, the transformers are located on the south side of the building with no obvious trenching existing for the wiring to the stalls at this point. I will have to study this situation more closely next time I am there.

Tesla website says Erie, PA Target opening in Q1 2022. I would assume this is the location to which they are referring. I will check on this site's progress periodically since I live in Erie.

I also live in Erie so I'll be watching for this one. I don't typically Supercharge locally but I pass this exit on I-90 several times per week. This will be a great improvement over the current Erie site. This one is more likely to get ICE'd. I wonder if they keep the current V2 site running when this comes online.

I also don't use superchargers locally except the one time I tried to go to Cleveland Hopkins Airport and back without charging in the winter and cut it close (The only time the car told me to slow down). I hope they keep both sites open as they each offer something different for travelers going through the area. Also, if and when they open to other brands of EV's we will need the extra capacity. I'm also hoping the new "Cleveland" supercharger site is in the Mentor area, that is where I seem to naturally need one when going to the west side of Cleveland for the weekend.

This location would actually have saved me from a completely drained battery once. A couple of years ago I left Erie with insufficient charge to go east on 90 for a ~150mi round trip. On the way back the route planner wanted me to go 30 minutes east in the wrong direction to charge and I ignored the warnings, thinking I could somehow beat the range estimate. I drove 10+ miles after 0% finally coming to a complete stop on the 90 Peach St. exit ramp within ~400 yards of the current Erie Supercharger. I could actually see the charging stalls from where the car shut down, lol. Had to jump the 12v battery and flatbed it the 2 blocks to the SuC. Learned a good lesson. Long story short there is still a huge gap on 90 between Erie and Buffalo. Salamanca has one at the casino but it's south of 90. Always good to have more options especially in winter.

Yes - I have been thinking of getting a Chademo adaptor to use on Thruway service area where a non-Telsa higher speed charger is located 30 miles SW of Buffalo. The adaptors only work for S/X which works for me but not 3/Y.

This supercharger is now open and shows up on the Tesla in car navigation. I was driving by and noticed it show up on the map, so I plugged in with a stone cold 15F battery and no preconditioning and got 18 kW, not surprisingly. Car suggested that I try navigating to superchargers in the future for faster charging. Navigation shows it as 250 kW eight chargers. I see Tesla‘s map of future chargers now shows a mentor location for this summer. That one will be a nice addition to this area.

Here is a photo of the new installation. As you can see from the photo there’s already a problem with ICEing. The signs say Tesla charging only with no option for short term parking like I have seen at other Sheetz stations. View attachment 765399
I was just there. Nice to see a gaggle of Teslas there already just after opening. It is on the nav screen already. Guess how's that's the guy from Canada found it.

I can see the ICEing issue. There arent so many ICE spots next to the building - so the superchargers take up valuable real estate. I think ICEing will be regular thing here. be safe

First stop at this location last night around 9pm. Arrived at 1% SoC (lol) to get a true V3 speed test. 2 ICE cars were there, one left right away and the other idled maybe 5 minutes. Reiterating that this is really poorly designed location and will be constantly ICE'd. The way you enter the Sheetz lot the chargers are most of the prime parking spots. There are only 3 regular spots plus 1 handicap next to that side of the store. The Tesla chargers are a full row of 8 spots opposite those. In this case I can't even blame the ICE cars that do park there because once you've pulled in if those 3 spots are full you are stuck in front of the chargers.

As for performance, the battery was warm but charge started slow (< 50kW) at 1% SoC. After a few minutes (5%+ SoC) it started ramping up eventually peaking at 153kW in the 11-18% SoC range and then tapering off at 20%-30% down under 100kW and closer to the "110-rule". Pretty typical charging curve for a legacy X.

battery was warm but not 'prepped' it seems, the first ramp up part was used to fully condition the battery. Given the temps outside, not surprised.
Navigation was set to the SC but I don't think preconditioning happens with such a low SoC. The notice never appeared and it had a solid 15 miles of driving to prep the battery. It was 55F outside which was unusually warm for this time of year. Again I think this is fairly typical charge curve and I'm not sure I've ever seen a peak rate until that 10-20% sweet spot. My P85D is much worse.
