Supercharger - Escanaba, MI

I think there are very few of us looking to travel Da U.P. in our Tesla's. I am sure there are folks who do the WI to upper-lower trip but how many really?

I say this as someone planning to take my P85 degraded down to 247miles up to the Keweenaw. That is going to be pushing it. I think there are folks who would make these trips if chargers were available but I really question to size of the demand.

I went through there a week ago.

Saw a couple other Teslas and one stayed at the quality inn at Escanaba for their charger the same day I did.

It would be nice to have that thoroughfare with a SC at Escanaba. But it has been on supercharge.info for over 400 days. So I’m not getting my hopes up. Fortunately I can stay overnight at a hotel with a charger there.

It’s also one of the longest trips without a supercharger in the USA. That’s 317 miles between Gaylord, Michigan Tesla superchargers and the Green Bay, Wisconsin Tesla superchargers.

Sault Ste Marie and Escanaba are needed in the Upper Peninsula for travel and tourism.

I am not saying I don't want to see chargers but if they are catering to numbers I am sure there are overcrowded areas that rank higher than this obscure route expansion.

Nav tells me that if I leave home near Appleton I will have to top up in Green Bay and will be at 2% at destination, I will probably stop for ice cream in Florence at the public J1772 for some buffer........that has me considering Wausau route and hitting the destination chargers at the Three Lakes Winery. Plan to over inflate tires a little and drive the speed limit to stretch range too.

Iron Mountain would be a better location for my travels and is closer to Gaylord, less direct if coming from Green Bay but if coming from further west would be good.

I take this route twice a year minimum on my way west. Before I would take the Ferry from Ludington for some $ and was putting coal ash in the bottom of Lake Michigan. I really dislike driving the Chicago route.

Just an observation. Some of the most obscure charging sites with populations next to nothing and few Tesla cars also have Superchargers. Why? Often I am at one of those obscure sites and I see 6 Tesla's all with plates out of state, and some really out of state. For trippers they are a connector. Gives us options for places less traveled. I also think opening up new routes will alleviate some stress on other high traveled routes, as we had to travel those routes before. There is a thread about most wanted superchargers. For me it is in Escanaba and Cody Wyoming. Those places have really low population, yet will open up so much new area to travel in that I might never go the other routes again.

Kind of forcing everyone to go though a narrow area vs. trying to spread them out is my thought, but then again just a thought.

Best example of a remote supercharger existing to enable long distance travel was one of the earliest built and in 2017 it got upgraded from the old trapezoidal housing to the new round housing. It's in Lusk, WY which is a sprawling metropolis of 1500 people and lies on the route between Denver, CO and the Black Hills in SD.

It was built as part of the original transcontinental supercharger route, still only has 4 stalls, and probably sees the most usage during the Sound Of Silence rally in Custer, SD. It will likely see decreasing usage as Tesla installed a bigger supercharger in Wheatland, WY as well as a supercharger directly in Custer which means only the lowest range cars or those that experience the terrible Wyoming headwinds will need to stop in Lusk.

I'm actually really hoping for a supercharger near Casper, WY as well as the I-94 and ND superchargers so that I can drive my car from Denver to visit family in the WIlliston, ND area.

??? According to Google Maps, Escanaba is 204 miles from Gaylord and Iron Mountain is 255 miles, plus you would normally drive through Escanaba to get to Iron Mountain...

What is really needed are SCs in Iron Mountain, Escanaba, the Soo, Houghton and Marquette to make the UP fully accessible, but that's a pipe dream...

If you trying to get to the lower peninsula from Green Bay, it would definitely be better to go to Escanaba via Menominee because Iron Mountain would add a good chunk of extra driving so Esky makes more sense for a trans-UP route between Howard and the eventual Mackinaw or Soo superchargers.

Iron Mountain would be a good supercharger site though for Green Bay to Marquette or Houghton/Keweenaw, either of which I think could have a similar type of draw as the Black Hills with lots of seasonal vacation travel for the UP. Traverse City or Mackinaw would have the similar vacationer draw fro the LP, the former which already has a lit supercharger and the later which has one in Tesla's "coming eventually" map and just got some destination chargers.

Supercharger.net now shows construction has started at the Soo! Esky is next? No one has reported on the site this week. Could it have started?

Possibly...but unlikely. The firm doing the work along the TCH is Canadian, not surprisingly. And it sounds like they're headed to Wawa next. I suspect it will be an American construction company doing Escanaba. Not that it must be that way; it's just easier in terms of getting work permits, etc.

Mind you, I don't care if they hire an Australian company to build Escanaba as long as it happens sooner rather than later. The permit is, what, 426 days?

Just so people know, the SS Badger spent millions of dollars to stop dumping coal ash, so they don't do they any more. Personally I think there's a romantic patriotism to driving a car made by the first car company whose cars can all run on American coal to the last ferry that runs on America coal and in both cases produce less CO2 than a car running on Middle Eastern oil.

I also make the trip to the UP often enough, both around to lower Michigan and to Norway in the UP, so the Escanaba charger is a big deal to me.

Just so people know. SS Badger spent years fighting the change to stop dumping coal in Lake Michigan. Finally they came upon a deal with the EPA. Black coal smoke still comes from the smokestack and they have no plans to move away from coal. They lobbied both Michigan and Wisconsin to relax the laws that were coming into effect. Not exactly a green neighbor that becomes green while kicking and screaming.

Still SS Badger considered going to LNG, but ruled it out. The Badger can do currently things like carry windmill arms across lake michigan. It is a better freight than passenger and carry ferry. One would suspect if they lost the large bulk items they would cease to exist. The other ferries take 2.5 hours vs. 4

While I respect your patriotism. I find nothing at all romantic about coal burning smoke drafting all across lower Michigan enveloping the lungs of families. Michigan is moving more renewable and leaving coal via our electric provider. While others line pockets and make protectismism type laws that do nothing in the way of protecting.

Oh and I have rode the ferry 25+ times. Just won't need to anymore. Much prefer a car route.

Between the Mackinaw Bridge and Escanaba, Mi there is a couple of locations to "recharge". The Adoba Hotel in Naubinway has a 40a Tesla destination charger outlet providing around 25miles per hour via Plug Share. It is listed as for Patrons only but reading comments it appears as if one can use it for a "fee". Kewadin Casinos and RV Parks/Campground (Manistique) do offer a 30amp outlet which "might" be available for your Tesla. There is two RV campgrounds with 30 and 50 amp outlets about 25 miles east of Escanaba on Highway 2. Whitefish Hall RV park and Whispering Valley RV park exist at this location.
