Wish they'd open the new Dublin one already, just been idle for months and months

I was here yesterday checking out the new SpC and that security station is TOTALLY in the way of parking and driving. They should move it onto the muddy grass, I had to do a 9 point turn to get into the supercharging space.

Or another way is to come into the lot from the other entrance down the street, where the not-yet-operational EVgo chargers are. I only discovered that when I was leaving but apparently some other owners were smarter than us and figured it out earlier.

Any idea why the switchgear cabinet is so large? Typically it’s just one cabinet about the size of a charging cabinet. This one and the one in Napa (it’s green there though) are 3 times the size.
It’s probably a 4000 A cabinet. Those cabinets match the capacity of the largest 480 V transformers that PG&E is using (3325 kVA). Any future expansion would only need a transformer change out on the utility side as the bus bar size and ducts would already be sized to that larger cabinet. A pad mounted transformer change out is mostly a bolt on affair.

Do they bill by the transformer? Why not put in a bigger one if you plan to expand?
Yes. PG&E charges less money to provide and connect a 1000 kVA transformer like they have now versus a bigger 3325 kVA transformer. I don’t know the rationale of Tesla not asking PG&E for the bigger service from the get go: perhaps they have no set plans for expansion yet but want to lay the bigger switchgear and cables to avoid having to dig in the future if they do.

Where would said expansion go? That side lot is full.

I am guessing there is something else going on. Maybe the ability to feed back into the grid from a solar canopy or something? Or room for small battery storage to shave peak loads? If they wanted to plan a future expansion they would have put it someplace where additional stalls are feasible in the same area.
