Supercharger - Greenville, SC

Just made a trip across the Charlotte <-> Decatur desert and stopped off to see what the supercharger in Greenville looked like now that its been a year since construction was halted. I'll post again about the trip, short story, I had no problem whatsoever driving straight through this leg and had 20 miles left on either end.

Now for the abandoned supercharger... I took a couple of panning video shots to get the full effect of the beauty of this supercharger! Actually, its a shame this got stuck as this is a really easy on/off and pretty good location. A nice little self contained parking area.

What was/is the lawsuit about anyway? Anything to do with not wanting something ugly in the parking lot? because .. well.. lol...

I remember Elon telling CBS News that the superchargers would still work after the zombie apocalypse, but hadn't realized that they'd actually done the testing in Greenville!

Here are three pics I took as well...

I'll preface this with, I'm probably wrong so don't get excited, but ... did I just find the alternate location? :) probably not, but its fun to speculate.

Took a look at google maps and noticed that the satellite imagery had been updated recently. The original site shows with all the vegetation grown up, but also the equipment is still there and the container. See here:

So then I thought I'd spend just a couple of minutes perusing the satellite imagery to see where I thought the rumored alternate location could go, which is rumored to be on the other side of the interstate, and there really is no way to know, there are so many possibilities. Something caught my eye when I had the area zoomed out though, that there was a Holiday Inn Express, and the supercharger in Plymouth, NC is in the parking lot of a Holiday Inn Express, so I zoomed in and notice something in the parking lot behind the hotel.

Now this could be many things, but who knows. If anyone is over at that retail area and can swing by the Holiday Inn Express to see if anything is going on, would be interesting.

Ok, I thought maybe this was a bus or a trailer that had been dropped by someone staying at the hotel while they took out their tractor, but nope. Playing around with google tilted 3d view reveals this is definitely a container placed on the ground. Now it seems more likely that this is it.

Not to be "off the reservation", but a smaller 4 spot supercharger built relatively quickly in Commerce, GA would really take the pressure off the Greenville situation, IMHO

I agree, but that should have been done in the fall, before the cold weather rolled in. Right now, anyone with any flavor 85 should be able to drive straight through on a 100% charge as long as you don't go crazy with the speed. I didn't drive very conservatively and made it both ways from a ~98% charge (didn't wait for that last 4 or so miles). Had ~20 miles to spare on either end. NOLA_Mike (who was right behind me on the trip) made it in his P85D with single digit range at the end, but still no issue driving direct. Now the moment cold weather starts rolling in this fall of course this won't be the case... So if they can get the alternate location up this summer before the first of the cold weather rolls in, that would be best in my opinion.

Edit: I'll add that the return trip (Atlanta->Charlotte) had heavy rains for the first 30 minutes or so, also heavy traffic during that time so slow driving, after that I drove 60-70mph, and 65-75mph for the second half of it and still made it with 23 miles to spare:

Great sleuthing! Will you be driving back down there to check it out in person? :)

Mike

Ha! Not until late July when I might be going to Atlanta.

I can see why they fought Tesla.. with all that bustling activity and lack of available parking....................... /sarc
F'ing dbags

If only you knew the half of it. The owner of the land that is behind Whole Foods is, without use of better words, stupid! The place was an old textile facility that closed up, the plan was to renovate the building into a retail/mixed use facility, but they found all kinds of foul chemicals that had been dumped by the textile plant. The cleanup is worse than he had expected and from what I have been told, would not be worth his investment, so the whole place is for sale.
Now that being said, there is security on the premises as the owner does not want anyone on the property and he did not like the fact that DDR (lessor of building with Whole Foods in it) was allowing the SuperCharger site being built within view of his property.
The court hearing for this mess was continued and has a current court date of 7/6/15. I would go and listen in, but will be out of town during that time. If anyone in the Greenville area is not busy, maybe they could drop in and listen to what has to be said.

I will stop by the Holiday Inn Express myself in the next day or two and see if anything looks like it may be happening.

So let me get this straight ... the owner of a building doesn't want Tesla owners looking at his property because they are the type of scum that would come try to steal, well, whatever chemical infested non-functional equipment is left in there? The Model S does have some good cargo space though. Also, the owner wants to keep those low life pesky Tesla owners away from this building that is for sale? Am I getting this right? Because if I am, that's some weapons grade stupidity right there.

Or did you mean, that the owner didn't want the Tesla supercharger (and by association Tesla cars) to be visible from the building that is for sale, because it would lower the value and class of the property? Because if that's the case, that's some weapons grade stupidity right there.

+1. Just think of it, though. Whole Foods itself must threaten him quite seriously. He'd much prefer a Twin Peaks, a porn shop and a gasoline station. That would be more in keeping with the ambiance he seems to want, wouldn't it?

I'll need to borrow that one sometime.

Indeed. Something tells me there has to be more to this than just weapons grade stupidity. At least that's what I'm telling myself... I realize I'm probably wrong. :cursing:

Perhaps they're trying to keep us safe from riff raff hanging around their dilapidated building filled with dangerous old sewing equipment and some nasty dyes that could stain our alacantra headliners?

I'd imagine it's more likely a question of laibility, not wanting anyone on the property who might, through their own stupidity, injure themselves and then sue. Seems reasonable to me.

I hope it was not my great-great grandfather's mill. His site has probably been rebuilt a few times by now. He moved down from Rhode Island to Greenville, SC around 1800 and built a mill. I want a Greenville Supercharger to open so I can close the loop, drive a Tesla to Greenville, Supercharge, and visit great-great granddad's grave.
