The planning gets traction but the construction appears to be held back by Tesla. Even the SC in San Juan Capistrano has stalled out. Thr Tesla map only goes as far as coming soon. Last year I had delayed ordering my S in sequence with the Oxnard SC. I went ahead and now have the car and the Oxnard SC has not broken ground. This keeps us all chatting and not knowing...

Remember..... that all the contractors work for Black & Veatch. Tesla hired Black & Veatch to do the infrastructure construction and the development of the supercharger sites, of course, consulting with Tesla. So basically Black & Veatch is the construction management company that reports to Tesla. The contractors report to Black & Veatch. All the behind the scenes ground work etc. takes
a lot of time. All the kinks gotta get worked out so that the construction of the Superchcarger site can move ahead rapidly once the green light is given.

Ugg, .....I know, but that's the process in a nutshell.

I was in Indio CA today and took a few pictures of the site that has been posted in earlier posts. There is nothing new to report today. A fews photos for perspective. Note the freeway on/off ramps in the background.. very easy on/off I-10.

News for the Indio folks

Today, I stopped and talked with the construction crew in Roseville CA. They were running behind because they hit a hard volcanic rock layer that required bringing in some special equipment. They expect to finish in a week and a half, working 10 hour days, 7 days a week. Why does this matter to you? Well, I asked where are they off to next and the answer was Indio. They also hear that there were some permit problems. Assuming these should be cleared up, your construction should start in about 10 days.

Just found this article that announced a new store/service center in Cathedral City at an old Hyundai/VW location. It also mentions a supercharger. However, it's not clear whether or not it means a supercharger will be at the store/service center or at the location in Indio that we all thought it would be. Maybe Tesla changed their mind and is now putting the Indio supercharger here? Here's the supercharger quote from the article:

"Desert residents will be able to order the pricey cars, and Tesla owners will be able to hook into a computer to diagnose technical problems or recharge their vehicles in 40 minutes with a supercharger, Milos said."

Officials say Tesla is Cathedral City-bound

We went to Phoenix for Easter weekend to visit my sister. As we did at Christmas time, we stayed overnight at the Hilton in Palm Springs, charging at their Clipper Creek at 18 mph overnight. Then the next morning to Quartzsite and Phoenix.

On the way back, we stopped at the Indian Wells Resort Hotel. They have 2 HPWCs right in the entryway. The owner has a Model S and uses it daily. I called ahead and they said it would be $15 to charge there. We arrived at 2PM and checked at the desk and they said to hook up and pay when we leave. I had hoped for a 30-mph charge rate, but it was 24. We had a 2-hour lunch, adding 46 rated miles. When we gave our credit card to the guy at the desk, he didn't know how to deal with it and after waiting a couple of minutes for his co-worker to get off the phone, he just gave back our card and said forget, just go! Nice. It's about 5-6 miles off of I-10 so it's not too convenient, but it's one more option while we wait for the Indio charger that never seems to come.

After we got underway again, we joined a 7-mph traffic jam on I-10 between Palm Springs and Cabazon for about 5 miles. It was caused by several disabled vehicles (2 big-rigs, and 3 SUVs). It cleared up just before the Morongo Casino. We stopped there to play some blackjack. They have 2 Nema 14-50s in the valet garage, which we've used before. Unfortunately, they are not 50 amps and give a charge rate of only 20 mph. On the bright side, we stayed 2 hours and left $1440 richer.

We're hoping the next time we make this trip (in the fall?), the Indio supercharger will finally be up and running so we can comfortably make the trip in 7-8 hours.
