3 Superchargers and 2 Destination Chargers
Oh good. I read the Stuff article, which didn't make the distinction, and I was concerned that Tesla was putting in generic DC fast chargers.

The people who are the most upset (luddite councillors and their followers) are going to have no clue about the difference between AC and DC chargers, so this is a nice cheap way to get around it.

Not to say there would be anything wrong with generic DC fast chargers, but if they did it, it should be in partnership with another company that specialises in it.

The local Owners Club is going to follow up with Tesla and see what's happening with it. Seems odd since the NPDC looked like they had changed their tune and were consulting with the public at the end of June on a proposed site. It could just be a website error

The council meeting that keeps on giving.
When I first read that piece, I thought it was just another CleanTechnica blog-type post about old news.

Turns out, buried in there, this is a link to an update on the original story with the details: New Plymouth still open to Tesla, despite switching off plan for electric supercharger station

Someone on one of the Facebook groups has a friend who has been tasked with installing it. They're going to be putting in 3 V3 stalls at the Novotel Hotel, with installing starting very soon.
Assume then on Hobson St in council parking? Or actually on hotel property?

I'm assuming probably the latter. From scanning the council reports seems the site per post #23 received good feedback, but some concerns about exclusivity and ultimately council couldn't reach agreement with Tesla.

Sounds like it will be on Hotel property. The council were being dicks about it so I guess Tesla just went private. I think a hotel is ultimately a better location than a mall, since a hotel car park is generally always open so guests can come and go as they please.

Depends on the purpose.
The mall chargers in Aus (and US) major cities are very popular with Uber drivers and owners who don't have charging at home (apartments, or terraces etc) and most are 24hrs or Tesla has an access arrangement.
Less useful for those driving through.

They are also often good sites for power
- the centre was either built with excess capacity for expansion, or the shift to LED lighting and more efficient HVAC has created spare capacity.
