This listing just appeared on PlugShare about 10 minutes ago. Apparently, the Newport News Virginia Supercharger is under construction. The Supercharger is said to be located at the Patrick Henry Mall close to the Dick’s Sporting Goods. Newport News is slated to have a Supercharger for this year, so let’s see how this goes. Address: 12300 Jefferson Ave, Newport News, VA 23602, USA - 6 stalls
Confirmed. I’ve talked to the PlugShare user who found the location, which tells me the parking area in which the Supercharger will be is dug up and fenced off, and that the estimated opening date is October 15th. PlugShare Location Will add this on Supercharge Info
There's already an existing TMC thread for this location, but it's technically in the wrong sub-forum (Southeast instead of Mid-Atlantic): Supercharger - Newport News, VA
Yes, it is under construction! Getting these photos now from user Uncle Bill on PlugShare. It seems there is actually 12 stalls rather than 6. He tells me there are about 11 parking stalls for Teslas. Will update Supercharge Info. @Big Earl @JSergeant
August 8 - clearly in the early stages of construction. Location: you have to go around back of the Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News. The mall is on Jefferson Avenue and is close to the exit/entrance for I-64. They are to the right of the Dick's Sporting Goods store. You can see the DSG sign logo in this picture.
I'm in Newport News for the night and thought I would stop by and see if there had been any noticeable progress. No change in the pedestals. I'm glad to see them building this one.
I know other SuperChargers being built in VA/NC (Cary, Salem, Lynchburg, Madison) are all waiting for the pedestals, as well. Rumor has it, it won't be for another month or two. Let's hope that it is only a rumor!
I stopped by on Saturday night (Aug 24) and no visible change. Still no pedestals so based on the previous comment sounds like a lot of current construction projects are all waiting on these.
There are no visible changes as of Sept 30 and no great high speed options nearby. Electrify America appears to be struggling. Meanwhile the nearby Greelots CHAdeMO charger has been decommissioned. I travel to this area frequently and really look forward to a better charging solution.
Can someone get a close up shot of the information panel on the cabinet? If so, we might be able to discern if the charger is a V3 (which the pedestal delay has me wondering). It would be an excellent place for a higher speed charger to keep the EV traffic flowing.
No need for close-ups when the supercharger cabinets are already on site. The V2 and V3 cabinets look decidedly different. And these are definitely V2. If you're unfamiliar, this is what a V3 cabinet looks like:
Thanks for keeping this up to date. I have family in Chesapeake and it'll be nice to charge up on the way.
Stopped by this evening and the pedestals are installed. I tried to charge on several of the stalls but they aren't hot yet.
My son sent me this photo this afternoon. I don't think they are turned on yet (awaiting final inspection?) but otherwise everything looks done.
