I called the Best Western in Ozona and they confirm that superchargers have been under construction for about two weeks. They expect it to be another 3 weeks or so before they are complete.
It makes me think that many of these I-10 SC will just show up on the navigation. I mean, who's gonna drive out from Tucson to San Antonio and check? Not me!
Thanks for your Junction and Ozona reports. Did you also pass through Fort Stockton today and look for activity? It looks like there are several possible hotels that have hosted other superchargers: Best Western, Hampton Inn, La Quinta, and Holiday Inn Express.
Justicepool: yes, Ozona Best Western - immediate right turn at the west-bound exit to access. BW is being remodeled. Secluded location for the SCs. DQ and a pretty good local restaurant an easy walk ~ 1/4 mile away. Looks like construction just started - pretty messy. emupilot - yes, we looked in Fort Stockton but didn't see anything obvious. We've been watching the Pilot truck stop and the hotel cluster on the west end of town. No luck, yet.
Ozona, TX Interstates: I-10 US Numbered Highways (<=5mi): None I-10 From: Casa Grande, AZ - 727 miles To: Junction, TX (Under construction) - 90.4 miles Diversion: 0.4 miles From: Buckeye, AZ - 805 miles To: Columbus, TX - 328 miles To: Three Rivers, TX (I-10, I-37) - 277 miles From: Gila Bend, AZ (I-8, I10) - 786 miles To: Cisco, TX (TX-163, US-67, TX-206) - 203 miles To: Sweetwater, TX (TX-163, I-20) - 154 miles To: Amarillo, TX (TX-137, US-87, I-27) - 339 miles To: Waco, TX (I-10, TX-864, US-190, US-377, TX-765, TX-45, TX-574, US-84, TX-6, I-35) - 287 miles To: Albuquerque, NM (TX-137, US-380, UFOs, US-285, I-40) - 527 miles To: Victoria, TX (I-10, TX-1604, US-87, TX-119, US-59) - 276 miles It's exciting to see I-10 being built out, but comprehensive coverage has quite a way to go!
As Ft. Stockton is 108 miles away from Ozona, has numerous roads passing through, and is the only town west of Ozona at anything like the right spacing, it does seem almost certain that the next SC will be there.
This could have been the issue with the entire route - there are so few viable places in some stretches that they had to lock down the locations of *all* sites before they started. One site falling through could have thrown a spanner in the works for all the others - like a delicate house of cards.
Benson, AZ ~117 miles from Casa Grande Lordsburg, NM 109 miles from Benson Las Cruces, NM (site negotiations in progress) 125 miles from Lordsburg El Paso, TX 42 miles from Las Cruces (needed to shorten the next leg) Van Horn, TX (site "coming soon") 121 miles from El Paso Fort Stockton, TX (site "coming soon") 120 miles from Van Horn Ozona, TX (under construction) 107 miles from Fort Stockton
Purely speculative on my part, but based on the buildout of I-80 in Nebraska, I think Tesla is trying to keep the segment legs on these routes a little lower, more like 100 miles. I-10 is a little tough to do it well, so some of the legs may need to be a bit short.So, that said, maybe something like Casa Grande - Tucson ~ 70 miles Tucson - Willcox ~ 80 miles Willcox - Lordsburg ~ 75 miles Lordsburg - Deming ~ 60 miles Deming - Las Cruces ~ 60 miles (perhaps you can skip Deming) Las Cruces - Sparks ~ 65 miles Sparks - Van Horn ~ 105 miles Van Horn - Ft. Stockton ~ 120 miles Van Horn - Ozona ~ 107 miles. That would end up being 8, 7 if you take out Deming. Although I like Deming as it's used as a shortcut to get to I-25
