Last week I spoke to a representative from the El Dorado County Air Quality Management office, he and I discussed the future of Electric Vehicle charging around the county. He said that when he last spoke to the Tesla representative, they had not pulled the plug (sorry for the pun) on the installation of the superchargers in both Placerville and in South Lake Tahoe. While there were some issues with the location they chose for Placerville, due to an old gas station that was located in the area, they had not canceled that contract. However, they did put it on a lower priority. There were also issues with the sites that Tesla looked at in South Lake Tahoe due to property owners of the parking lots. It seems Tesla is still interested in a supercharger in both sites, they are just not high priority locations for them right now. So as far as the county knows, those sites are still planned for superchargers, but not in the near future. It does appear that the supercharger for SLT will be closer to the casinos than to Heavenly. I was told that they were looking at a parking structure that was on city property, close to Heavenly's stateline gondola. But that is only speculation at this point.

Very informative, thank you!!! I do wish though that SLT would be prioritized but from what I've read, getting there and back from Folsom isn't an issue so with the L2 options at the casino garages, it isn't all bad.

I think that these two particular situations reinforce the unanticipated issues that Tesla encounters when trying to construct Superchargers across the country. I truly believe that Tesla tries to build them according to a general plan as reflected on their website, but then these things creep up to delay the entire process. So, Tesla (and we) have to wait for certain locations. This may also explain why there are the occasional "stealth" Superchargers that suddenly appear. Maybe a few of these spots were in the works for a much future date, but due to delays at other spots, Tesla decides to pull the trigger early because the funds have been budgeted and the contractors are available.

What map are you referring to? The maps at Supercharger | Tesla Motors and supercharge.info do not show a location planned for the South Lake Tahoe area?
The map here: https://edcgov.us/uploadedFiles/Government/Air_Quality_Management/El%20Dorado%20County%20EV%20chargers%209-2014.pdf

Note the "Current as of Nov. 2015" near the bottom right of the map, and that "- Heavenly" has been removed from the box at the upper right, which now just reads "South Lake Tahoe".

This is the first I've heard of a possible Supercharger in Placerville CA. That is very close to the Folsom Supercharger. Seems like an odd location.
Can you provide a link to the permit application? Thanks.

I agree, it is close to Folsom (about 25 miles). But it's also that much closer to South Lake Tahoe. I certainly will skip Folsom for Placerville if/when it's built.

Same here so I hope Tesla actually does build it. :) The more I can drain my battery from leaving my house in the east bay before I hit the next required supercharger the better. Or so I've been told... :)

I'm headed to Tahoe in early March so it's my understanding that I'll need to stop in Folsom to charge as my 90D won't make it all the way due to temp and elevation change.

The El Dorado County EV Chargers map where we heard about this upcoming supercharger has been updated. It still says that Tesla is planning supechargers in Placerville and South Lake Tahoe, but the previously shown specific location of the Placerville supercharger has been removed.

Thanks for the update. As mentioned earlier in this thread, Tesla had already decided against the previous site in Placerville they had initially selected for the supercharger installation, because there were issues due to an old gas station that was located there. Which is why that was finally removed from that pdf map. I also heard from a Tesla supercharger installation representative that due to the second install of superchargers in Folsom, that Placerville was a lower priority. I did give them other suggestions for installation locations in the area.

It seems a bit odd that two locations that are only ca. 5 miles apart would suffice to make Placerville a lower priority. I could see it if the extra location was to handle peak weekend traffic, but ISTM that Placerville is mainly needed to get a trailer-towing Model X up to SLT, and this extra Folsom location doesn't help that.

I had emailed Tesla, specifically [email protected], and inquired about the install of superchargers in Placerville. The response I received informed me that the Placerville location was no longer being considered. However, the message mentioned that if there was enough interest in a different location in Placerville, that it would be taken into consideration.

I suggested two different locations in Placerville that would be convenient stops for travelers on the way to and from Lake Tahoe, as well as anyone traveling along the hwy 49 route that would not take them to Folsom. I made these suggestions from the Tesla website's charging page. At the bottom of the page there is a link to suggest a supercharger location, which I have included here: Suggest a Supercharger location. If there is enough interest in having a supercharger in the Placerville area, you can fill out the form and submit this to Tesla.

The suggestions I made are the two following locations, and you could use these links to make the suggestions to Tesla.

Placerville, Swift Berry Parking Lot

Shopping Center, Missouri Flat Road, Placerville

Placerville, Swift Berry Parking Lot

Shopping Center, Missouri Flat Road, Placerville

This is a great location except eastbound travelers would have to go all the way up to Schnell School to get back on again. Not that big of a deal though. A lot better than many superchargers.
I agree that Swift Berry's return to Hwy 50 is a bit awkward. More importantly, it's on the wrong side of the road from all the restaurants and other services. ISTM that a location on the south side of Broadway and a bit more east in the mall, which I think is called Hangtown Village Square, with several fast food (McD's/Starbucks/Taco Bell) and other restaurants, plus access to two banks with ATMs and a grocery store across a side street, would be preferable. Options are more limited at Schnell Rd., but access is easier.

Other than that, anywhere along Main St. between Bedford and Spring Sts. provides easy access and lots of choices for food.

Missouri Flat's got good access and offers enough choices.

The only reason I suggested the swift berry parking, even though you would have to cross the street, is that Tesla had already explored the Hangtown Village Square. This was the original site where they were planning an install, but the only location in the parking lot suitable for the superchargers, they discovered, was the site of an old gas station. They abandoned the installation there because they were not interested in digging into potentially hazardous ground.

There are lots of supercharger locations where you would have to cross the street to get to some restaurants and amenities. And another reason I suggested the Swift Berry parking is that it goes largely unused, it already has power at the location (although I'm not sure if it is suitable for Tesla's needs). While getting back on the freeway is not too difficult, as mentioned, for east bound travelers have to drive up to Schnell School Road. Although west bound travel would only have to exit the parking lot and turn right under the overpass, and back on the freeway. The parking lot is immediately next to the off ramp from the freeway which would be very convenient. This would offset the inconvenience of driving up the street to get back on the freeway for east bound travel.

While a Main Street supercharger would be good for a lot of restaurants and local businesses, there's not a lot of options there for supercharger locations. The city owns most of the parking lots, and I don't see them too willing to reduce some of the parking spaces for tesla only parking. They are already planning on installing some level 3 EV hookups in the parking structure in downtown. While this could work for a convenient stopover instead of the superchargers, it would certainly require a lengthier visit to Placerville.

I do like the Missouri Flat road option. The parking lot is privately owned, which seems to be easier for Tesla to work with. There a plenty of options for food, coffee and shopping. And as you mentioned, easy access for both east and west bound traffic.

There is also some locations on Forni Road/Placerville Drive. Near the in-n-out is a good parking lot, but there would be fewer options for food and amenities.

Again, if anyone would like to see a location in Placerville, suggest it through the link on the Tesla website. I would think the more that a single site is suggested the more they would take it under consideration.

Headed to Sacramento today and Placerville popped up on the map in my car. It’s just off 50 in town near Rite aid with good food options. It’s open and I’m charging. V2

Still some landscaping tools on site.

It’s not on the map yet at Supercharge.info

I’m at Taco Bell, the charger is where my car’s triangle is.

12 chargers total.
