Has work started on the additional Barstow stalls? I might have to stop there the 3rd of July, the Thursday before a long Independence day weekend. I imagine there's a lot of potential for congestion on that date.

(If there's a dedicated Barstow thread, I couldn't find it.)

I didn't notice anything last weekend when there. On Sunday about 5:30pm it was completely empty when we arrived.

There are a lot of stories just like that, and the Vegas-Barstow leg can be a real challenge in the wind. Fortunately Tesla appears to have listened. I have been watching Clark County building permits for months and have not seen any permits, which is discouraging.

Clark County Permit Department is slower than Mohave Max climbing out of his den in spring!!

Is there any particular reason why people would want to stop at Primm instead of somewhere else? This only needs to be a top-off stop of 5-15 minutes, so why is access to more than a bathroom and a cold drink needed? Are people really that desperate to play slot machines as early/late as possible? ISTM that putting the SC at Stateline Service (65845 Cima Road, Nipton, CA.) provides better spacing, especially considering where the major climbs are. Stateline is 90 miles from Barstow and 65 from Las Vegas, while Primm is only 43 miles from Vegas and before the major climb, so you won't be able to charge very fast coming back in any case. Looking at the profile on gps visualizer, Stateline is in the middle of major climbs from both sides, and looks a lot easier for 60s to reach from Barstow than Primm. Granted, the location isn't upscale, but for such a short stop, who cares?

Nipton, or Baker, are certainly options. Here are some advantages to Primm.

Given the choice between a spot with lots to do and a spot with little to do, I would pick the spot with lots to do. Primm has the casinos, yes, but also lots of places to eat and a pretty good outlet mall. Much more like Gilroy than Harris Ranch.

Barstow-Primm is easy in either an 85 or a 60. Primm adds two advantages, however. First, it's about 165 miles to St. George, and with little net elevation difference between the two would allow 85s, and 60s in good weather conditions, to skip Las Vegas on trips from So. Cal. into Utah. 185 miles makes it just a bit more difficult and probably not something most 60 owners would try. Second, a decent charge in Primm would allow people visiting Las Vegas from So. Cal. to avoid charging in Las Vegas and easily return to Primm, even with some driving around in LV.

If there is thought of adding another charger between Barstow and Las Vegas, Baker probably makes more sense, as it is at the south end of the highway to Death Valley. With Baker and Nitpon only about 45 miles apart, Primm probably makes more sense if Baker is to get a charger eventually.

At only just over 20 miles apart, I would select Primm over Nipton for the amenities alone. If both are easily accessible from either direction, I would prefer to stop in the place with some options.

Primm is badly needed because it will take pressure off of Barstow. As of right now I have to fully charge in order to get to Vegas comfortably. Keep in mind NO ONE drives the speed limit from Barstow to LV. Average speed is in excess of 75-80. And add desert heat, strong winds and weekend traffic, there are number of variables that forces everyone to fully charge at Barstow. With Primm added we won't have to fully charge. BTW most people don't gamble at Primm. They shop and eat.

That being said, Whiskey Pete's has face up blackjack.

I had to stop there, because I didn't do a full charge in Barstow (left on 230 miles, my mistake). Then stopped at the J1772 for about 40mins. (Had a fully loaded car, with equiv of 5 people (3 but I'm 400lbs), and lots of luggage).

Will def charge to 250+ next time I'm in Barstow. Now I have a B battery instead of A so I think it'll be a little faster (maybe).

I usually drive no faster than 80 when going on I-15, too scared of getting a ticket

Primm is like entering a fantasy land. Even has a Starbucks over by the truckstop. That's rare! I finally visited there 7/17 and Primm gets my vote for much needed SC.

Nothing wrong with LV which is a quality SC in a solid building in a nice neighborhood. But Primm to St George being 161 miles is gonna be irresistible.

Warning to everyone that the J1772 at Whiskey Pete's was out of service yesterday. And that parking lot is a zoo on Sunday afternoons when there is traffic - it was nuts, took literally an hour to get out because it was so jammed.

As I understand it the parts for the ChargePoint charger there are available and waiting installation, there has been some confusion over what needed to be replaced. I am told that one of the two nozzles has been fine, but one has been wonky.

Primm is not the place to be when everyone is headed back to So. Cal. on a Sunday afternoon. One day the California casino lobby might lose its battle preventing the addition of lanes to I-15.

I wasn't saying that there doesn't need to be an SC in between Barstow and Vegas; the need for same is obvious, for the reasons you mention. I was just questioning why everyone was concentrating on Primm to the exclusion of other options, which have their own advantages. An SC in Baker will need to be added eventually for Death Valley traffic, and Nipton is also an intersection and a more central location.
