This would be a great location to build a nice facility for travelers - convenience store, restaurant, showers....

88 stalls is massive power. Even at 100kW per stall, that is 9MW. Isn't that about the capacity of an entire power distribution circuit? I hope there is a substation nearby.

Interestingly enough, this site was mentioned on Now You Know's Tesla Time News this week. Zac was confused as to why another giant site was going directly next to an existing large-ish site that was rarely busy, instead of multiple smaller sites spread out along the highway.

A lot of people shared ideas in the comments. There were similar ones to what is mentioned here - the fact there are no other viable locations (in terms of power supply, and services) up to 100 miles in either direction. But a few other random ideas:

  • The town paid for it (or possibly used $$ to make it a very easy decision for Tesla to do it).
  • It's an incentive to build more food outlets nearby (develop the town as more of a rest stop).
  • It's over-spec in preparation for opening to all EVs.

Some said "perhaps it's for the Tesla Semi!" forgetting that the physical plans are shown, and they're car sized spaces. (There are two pull-through stalls, but not big enough for Semis and labelled with the same charging equipment as other spaces)

Some pointed out the massive grid requirements, but nothing Tesla can't solve with enough solar, batteries, and space. (Note: No batteries included on the plan).

Also worth considering they could open it with significantly downgraded grid capacity, e.g. you'll only get max speed for the first 12-16 vehicles plugged in. Remember Tesla already do this with other large sites (capacity allows approx 100 kW per stall, recognising that at any one time many stalls will not have high load due to cars driving in/out, ramping up, limited due to vehicle battery, tapering due to high SOC, idle, etc)

It's already been discussed but the main reason is that there are very few other options in between Indio and PHX metro. Someone who hasn't driven this route probably wouldn't be fully aware of how desolate it is. Tonopah has a population of 23. Chiriaco Summit is basically just a gas station. Blythe, CA is the one place that probably has the electrical supply but a supercharger permit fell through there a couple years ago so who knows if there's political resistance or lack of host business or what. Blythe doesn't seem to have all the wide open spaces that Quartzsite has so that could be part of it.

A few photos of the area directly behind Terrible’s Gas Station. Take a look.. not exactly sure where the Tesla site may be. Directly behind Terrible’s Gas Station would be perfect. However it maybe the lot to the east. A very good location as well. You can see the Carl’s Jr. (where a Tesla Supercharging is located) in the distance in front of Terrible’s across two streets.

I've stopped here a couple of times and it's located where I use to stop for gas (loves on the other side of the freeway), so the location is practical. Not sure what the complaints are?

Those drawings look like the existing station that's built already?
