Supercharger - San Diego, CA (Qualcomm / Pacific Heights Blvd., 12 V2 stalls)

Still, for a Tesla it is still cheaper to use the "A" Street Supercharger than paying for much slower Chademo charging. Even with a Model 3 paying for the electricity, I believe paying for parking and Electricity is still cheaper than using Chademo.

For sure, it's just not always convenient. It depends on where you live and how you value your time.

But we're getting off topic.

So do we have a consensus if there has been more than 0% pressure relieved on this Supercharger since the opening of the Downtown location? We're about a month into Downtown being online and it has to have made at least a tiny bit of difference. I've charged at Qualcomm 3-4 times in the last couple years so I'm never actually there. I'd love to hear if the experience has improved.

In my several-times-daily queries on the GPS, Qualcomm still looks 11/12 or 12/12 full every time I select the location. And I read back a few posts and saw that it was 10 cars deep at (gulp) 10PM last week? Was that a typo?

I would have expected a tiny bit of relief from Downtown by now. . .

I think it's two factors.
1) A street isn't that popular for whatever reason. Most I've ever seen there is 4 cars
2) A lot more new cars are being delivered so the population to charger ratio probably isn't improving that much

just today my favorite spot near work was completely full. That never used to happen but infrastructure is going to struggle to keep pace with new deliveries as we get into the hockey stick phase of ev deployment.
Thing's will likely get a bit acrimonious,

Answer to 1 could be because A street doesn’t have that same FREE appeal

That’s part of it, but it’s also location. A lot of drivers are going to north county locations, never make it to downtown. The ineteresting thing for me is what happens when Carlsbad opens in a month or so. 20 stalls, free. How full each location is relative to each other will tell us a lot about who is using the SCs.

Going down to San Diego next month, was hoping the Carlsbad location would be up and running, because you’re right we won’t make it to downtown.
Would also be nice to not have to charge in LA area

Taking the ice was an option until I did the math and it was going to cost close to 500 bucks for fuel

I think the biggest impact to this location will come from opening of Superchargers in Del Mar, La Jolla, 4S Ranch/Carmel Mt Ranch. Downtown SD location is not a good substitute for those frequent this location. This site is close to number of tech and scientific companies, and close high end neighborhoods. Until that happens, i'm afraid this location will stay crowded.

BTW: Two weeks ago at 1:00AM Sun, the map said all 12 spots were occupied. Crazy. I still can't complain as I never waited at a SC the first 3.5 years of driving my car. The first time i waited for an opening was at Barstow, CA.

My recommendation would be to stop at San Clemente before heading to SD. I've yet to wait there. 20 spots.

I would recommend the San Clemente supercharger. It's near the freeway, has amenities, and in my experience, there are plenty of empty stalls.

Damn! I wonder if they were uber/lyft drivers

Never underestimate the human will to line up for FREE stuff.

I've seen many casino promotions where they give away ridiculous stuff, such as a cheap frying pan with the Golden Acorn Casino logo emblazoned on it. And without fail people are lined up out the door to claim their FREE prize. It's a horrible commentary on our human condition.

Btw, never forget to use ordinary J1772 chargers when you can. I went to UTC tonight for a dinner and a movie. I got 22.5 kWh of charge at the chargepoint chargers there. And it only cost $0.17/kWh, about what I pay at my house. And I got a nice close parking spot too.

I really like that A street has some destination chargers for this purpose. If you just need a local top off to make it home or are going to be somewhere for a couple hours those 10KW chargers are fantastic.

Adding some more destination chargers at malls etc. would be a nice supplement to the supercharger roll out.

Another issue: blatantly childish and disrespectful owners charging here.

Facts:
1. I showed up today and was 6th in line. I thought “that’s not so bad.”
2. There are 12 chargers. None of them reportedly charging slow today. And I still waited 50 mins (no exaggeration) to get a spot.
3. 20 mins into my charge, and only 1-2 others have left. Meaning at least 4-5 Teslas here have been charging for over an hour and 20 mins. They must be sitting at 100% or charging very slowly from 95-100. Sad. Just goes to show: give people a chance to take advantage of you or a system, and at least 25-35% of them will, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

Squares with my experience. Line was moving at about 1 car every 5 minutes meaning average charge time was about an hour.

Paired charging means you’re lucky to get 60% (20% to 80%) in 45 minutes. And that’s assuming all the pedestals are healthy.

One unaddressed conflict of interest will be Model 3 (non-P) owners who pay for their juice. Tesla wants their money. In a small way, this also incents supply into a limited market (there are only so many prime locations for SCs, and there’s no national partnership yet with either truck stops or gas stations - both serious misses).

Anyway, it’s sad to see what I’ve been saying for years now being realized: ICEing by our own is the #1 problem at SCs. Want to turn an 8-stall SC into a 2-stall SC? Dawdle.

Qualcomm is a mess. But almost all SoCal SvCs are getting full with waits now - even Clemente (21 stalls) on weekends. Tesla is once again behind the curve and they know it. It’s one thing for their new rep to say that there will be +10 SCs and +150 pedestals in 12 months in San Diego County, for example. It’s quite another to find such statements credible without a *lot* of medicinal Kool Aid.

One good thing about Qualcomm - with a reputation as bad as SJC, if Tesla even opens +5 new SCs in San Diego County, the load *will* get spread around. Can’t say that about, say, FV or RB. Solving LA and the OC relative to SD/North County is going to be... interesting.

At least you didn't get cut in line. I was next and there was a tesla left in the other side. I was about to move but there was another tesla who arrived after me and others who was waiting behind me and they move in quickly to get the spot. This was when there is no valet person managing. All in all I didn't care too much because one opened up pretty quickly. Though it sucks for the one behind me because even though they arrived before this guy, they now have to wait longer.

It wasn't like this in the old days. I remember when people would actually stop and let the guys waiting know of spot opening up in the other side. And headed to the end of the line.

Sad how now the tesla club is not longer exclusive with civilize people. It is everyone for themselves now.

A couple of months ago there were 4 cars in line. It was at night and the valet wasn't there. A Tesloop guy tried to pull into a spot that should have gone to before the first person in line could get over. I was so pissed. I went over and 'politely' pointed to other cars in line and asked him to get in line. He claimed he didn't know there was a line. What a joke. Most of the time drivers are aware and are generally polite and respectful. This guy, who drives for a service, knows better.
