Wiki Superchargers Visited

I think I’m leaning towards the opposite color scheme approach. Superchargers visited in a variety of pastel colors, with not-yet-visited, construction and permits all being primary colors. The goal, after all, is to focus on where we are going, not where we have been. The more places you visit, the more important it is for your not-yet-visited sites to stand out. I also don’t think closed sites should be a color, as it makes them stand out - perhaps gray.

You got the thumbs up from my color-blind husband... he can tell the difference between each group well enough.
That is the philosophical debate. Personally, I like my existing visits to stand out. I use the map often to show others where I've been with the car to help allay range/charging concerns/questions. In the context of closed on this map, it will only show up as "closed" if you've bagged the supercharger. If you haven't bagged the supercharger, it gets excluded from this view. Depending on where we land with the philosophical debate, I can modify the closed-but-visited color to a lighter shade of red if we want.

I look forward to hearing from others: Do we want the "not yet visited" locations to be what stands out or the locations we've already visited? The default view for most competitors right now is to only display the locations they've visited. We can also change that as part of this process too if we desire. I think if we choose our colors well, it would be nice to have everything turned on by default for most maps.

Major update to Tableau.

Okay, folks. I've begun to address several questions/requests I've heard about Tableau and I'm seeking your input before I go further because it'll be a lot of work to propagate this across all of your tabs. I only want to do it once. The big changes are:
  1. Standardize colors for years and status.
  2. Expand the information in the tooltip
  3. Add links to the relevant TMC discussion thread for each supercharger.
I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who is color blind. Are there better colors I could choose (see below)?

A description of each change is below.

Colors
Here is @AzEd's map with all status types turned on. You can see the legend on the right side and the maps showing the colors. He's only visited one location in 2019, so yellow isn't visible (it's buried in the other AZ stops). If these don't work, what colors would you suggest? Outline of the thought process here:
  • I tried to make the year colors (i.e., your visits) stand out more than others.
  • Bright green for "open" superchargers (not shown on this map).
  • light green for not-yet-visited locations is similar to the bright green I used to represent "open" on other maps.
  • light blue for permit locations allows them to fade into the background but still be visible.
  • Red is the universal color for stop, so that seems appropriate for closed locations.
  • Orange for constructions mirrors supercharge.info.
You can see this in action on a special tab I created called "Color discussions." Feel free to play with it there.

Tooltip
When you hover over a location, a tooltip presents itself. I've expanded the amount of information in the tooltip and tried to make it a bit more readable. Thoughts are welcome.

Links to TMC Discussion Threads
While I can't put links in the tooltip itself, if you click on on a supercharger location, the tooltip turns into a "menu" and I can embed links there. I've currently configured two links:
  1. a link to the first post in this discussion thread.
  2. a link to the specific discussion thread related to the supercharger you selected.
This is what it looks like when you click a supercharger. Again, you can try this on the "color discussions" tab (link above).

First, amazing work on the Tableau sheet as always.

But asking a colorblind guy which colors to use is kind of like asking a blind man which symbols to use on the map :)

If you wanted to use 5 colors, you should go with black, white, red, blue and yellow, but of course there needs to be a background color as well so that might actually only be 3 or 4 useful colors. You could possibly come up with a reasonable 5-color scheme by using a gray background, but that's pushing it.

But yes, I think I speak for all colorblind people when I say that color-coded graphics can bite me!

I'm sure everyone is different, but I prefer that only my "Not Yet Visited" superchargers show up as a default. Every time it reloads, I am constantly having to uncheck the "Permit" and "Construction" boxes, and I'm fairly certain other guys in the top 10 are doing the same thing.

Major update to Tableau.
Personally, I think red is too important a color to lose for closed sites; yes, there are a few. Only a few. I'd pick an ugly brown or something that isn't as vibrant as the red. Yes, I do understand the current rationale.
In general, I'd probably stay away from the traffic green/yellow/red colors for years, specifically for the go/caution/stop underlying meaning.
Not colorblind. But maybe you can get around the whole discussion if you have a different dot, like a triangle, square, circle, with variations for colored in or not.

That's an interesting idea!
Can you reload? I made "permit" a bit more grey and even lighter. They look completely different on my monitors, so I'm hoping the change helps on your end. I can definitely see how they blended.
Yes, that change helps a lot.

Without turning this into a term paper project for class:

Is this tableau program limited to colors within circles? Can other geometric shapes be used? Can circles be only outlined in black?

My personal preference is to see where I have been with the colors by year. I can see why the leaders want this flipped. But either way is ultimately OK by me. I agree that the handful of closed Superchargers should not be a red dot (even though I understand the reasoning.) Perhaps an "X" instead if allowed by the program. Or the red circle with a horizontal line through it like the "do not enter" signs on the highways.

You have done a terrific job with this program. Much thanks!

I changed your default to only show the open locations you have yet to visit.

Yes, other shapes can be used. Not sure about outline colors. Tableau has so many options its overwhelming. I'll work up another option with different shapes for Open, Closed, Permit, and Construction. If has artistic skills, I can load actual images to be used for shapes. if someone can create them...definitely not my forte. For instance, maybe @Chuq or @tes-s could get me the traffic cone image from supercharge.info so we could also use it for construction. What kind of image would be good for permit or closed?

See the "Option 2" tab with each location's shape determined by status (construction, open, permit, closed). I tweaked the colors a bit per suggestions. I tried making the not-yet-visited dots brighter and, IMHO, it overwhelmed the map.

There seems to be some interest in @Big Earl's suggestion of emphasizing not-yet-visited. I'll work up an option for that.

Based on feedback so far, we'll reserve red for something else.

Anywho, take a look at Option 2. zoom in to see the shapes more clearly.

It would be neat to come up with symbols that show the evolution of the build-out. Like the stages of a tree - 2012/13 travel is a seed, 14 a sprout, 15 a seedling, 16 a sapling, 17 a full grown tree, 18 a larger canopy, etc. Not saying that has to be the image, only using the analogy to represent the concept. A battery gauge would be a similar concept.

For me, it seems there are two different maps: one showing visits, and one showing "opportunities".

When showing visited chargers, different colors by year.

When showing opportunities, one color for all visits (black?), one color not visited (green?), one color for construction (orange?) and one color for permit (blue?).

I like this suggestion. The SC's that we have not been to should use the primary colors. Personally, I'd be in favor of those being Red as they would really stand out that way. But that's just me (apparently).

Agreed. Save red for something better.

See the "Option 2" tab with each location's shape determined by status (construction, open, permit, closed).

I like the "Closed" symbol as well as the Construction symbol However, the "open" symbol seems a bit "busy" to me...and I don't think yellow is a great color on grey... Perhaps I'm simple, but for the open sites the circle seems to work just fine to me.

Do we want the "not yet visited" locations to be what stands out or the locations we've already visited?

I definitely prefer the sites that I have not visited to stand out...which is why I have my default map setup that way. The not visited could be in Red as I stated earlier. I like the use of Black for the closed sites with that symbol, that's a good choice. But again, I'd rather see the primary colors used for the Not Visited sites and have the Years use the Pastel or Earth tones.

Agree on the idea of two templates for users to choose from, however in the opportunities template, visited locations should be a pale color (or colors) in order to emphasize the not-visited locations. Black feels like it would complete for attention, visually.

Regarding shapes and icons, they look okay when you’re zoomed in, but the map becomes cluttered when zoomed out. I’m not sure if a casual viewer would understand what all of that meant if you were trying to show them where you’ve been.

The map is going to continue to become more populated, so reducing visual clutter now will help a lot in the future.
