More Info: Supercharging.Life database

This is a friendly contest for Tesla owners to track the number of unique public Superchargers where they have charged

- "Supercharger count" is the number of unique public Superchargers where you have charged (just being there does not count), whether or not you were the person plugging in the vehicle (such as a Valet Parking garage or a Passenger) and whether or not it was your own personal vehicle (such as a rental, a loaner, or a friend's Tesla) as long as you were the one who drove >50% of the distance to reach the charger(s).
- The list of chargers in the supercharging.life database are the ones included in the game. If you think one should be added or removed from the list, let us know.
- Only chargers available to the public without special permission are included in the game.
- Chargers not connected to the grid are not counted.
- Doublet locations like the North/South Supercharger 'pairs' in CT, ME, NH, etc. count as individual locations.
- More than 1 charger at the same address, such as Lenox Square Mall (Atlanta, GA) or Montgomery Mall (Bethesda, MD) count as individual locations when they appear as a separate location on the Tesla Nav screen.
- Inactive competitors will be archived and removed from the leaderboard. Just post an update to be reactivated.

See Supercharging.Life database for info on how to post your own visits to the database (preferred), or post your locations with date visited to this thread and one of the admins will update your list for you. All visits must be posted to this thread - not just entered in supercharging.life. If you are the first in the game to visit a supercharger location, please post to the thread as soon as you can so others know it has been visited.

I'm in Estero FL right now. Impressive 16 stall V3 station. Right next to it are also 16 J1772 plus. They are Tesla HPWC but all have the J1772 plug. They are not modified, the plugs have a Tesla label on them. 93C9F118-C868-4D1A-8A24-35CAB4F23D70.jpegE805616F-DA7D-40EF-BF09-052AF7B0C2A9.jpeg

I always talk about how I hate that Tesla has jacked up the price on Supercharging, but I followed Big Horn's reference above and started exploring my history and it turns out I NEVER paid as little as I remember paying when I first got the car. Cheapest was 26 cents at the time and now if I charge off peak it's 24. I even got to charge at the 16¢/kWh Gilroy many times in the past. Despite my protestations Supercharging ain't all that bad, although I note, after the 12th Gilroy it is now 38 cents all day like everywhere else

Referral miles what are those?

OK, I got three, but they were gone in a heartbeat. Glad that people are finally running out of referral miles. You can finally see why I work so hard to not pay for charging by using my CHAdeMO or a J1772 overnight.

A little back-of-the-envelope arithmetic:

One hundred kilowatt-hours will cost $38. If we assume fuel prices are back to $3.50/gallon, that is 10.85 gallons of fuel. A modest rate is 32 MPG, or roughly 350 miles for $38 of stinky petroleum-based fuel. Gas hogs like SUVs will probably fare worse.

I don't drive fast, so I average about 4 1/3 miles per kWh in our '18 long range rear wheel drive Model 3. So, figure about 410 miles for me for $38, or almost 20% further.

Still a better deal than driving ICE. And I don't see fuel dropping much below $3.50 again in California for quite some time.

I'm pretty sure Tesla and other EV charging providers make the same calculations, therefore the rise in gas prices was indirectly bad for EV drivers as well. Their sweet spot is a price where they can (eventually) make money while still being able to make the claim that they are "cheaper than gasoline." The higher the price of gas goes, the more wiggle room they have to raise the price per kWh.

I made up some errands down in South Carolina, so that I could bag the new Greenville area supercharger
  • Piedmont, SC
It's easier to get in and out than the original Greenville SC, but jammed in a very small space on the side of a convenience store. The relatively new Fairplay, SC, supercharger is the best option if you're traveling I-85 in the Upstate.

While I was in Greenville, I also test-drove a used 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S at the Lexus dealership. Comfy seats and fun to drive. Lack of one-pedal driving feels weird now, though. It had Innodrive, but once I finally figured out all the buttons and levers to turn it on, it did much worse than basic Autopilot on a regular road, so I turned it off again.

I may be in the minority, but it makes it more fun for me to invent silly reasons to go to superchargers.

Tesla likely has exorbitant demand charges for the volume of electricity they consume. They may still just be breaking even. It’s introduced some gamification of charging with different rates across state lines, some with TOU discounts that aren’t available at neighboring stations (Lone Tree—18 cents vs 39 cents in Centennial) and random free stations (Amarillo). I think we were somewhat lead astray by promises of 7 cent kWHs for the semis.

Gas prices in the Bay Area are north of $5/gal, nearing $6 for the “good” stuff.
I don’t see gas prices here dropping below $5/gal for quite some time. A lot of it is real estate/leasing costs, but certainly there is much opportunism and CA gas taxes in play as well. Ironically, the oil refining is done all done a handfuls of miles N and E of SF proper.

Even if I still owned an ICE, which I never will again, I’d be happy with something south of 30 cents.

I don’t disagree with what @PLUS EV said, either.

The Model 3 is pretty efficient, as you know. EPA par for my my big and old S-60 is 300 Wh/mile. I do a lot better than that overall — my last 70k miles has averaged 266 Wh/mile — but I would guess that road trips are about EPA par, due to high speeds on Interstate highways. So 3 1/3 miles/kWh for my car. That would be about 330 miles for your $38, or 11.5¢/mile. Not as good as a Prius but about the same as 30 mpg for $3.50/gallon gas.

However, for those who do most of their charging at home, the numbers can look a lot better. My local electric rate is 13.5¢/kWh (I actually pay zero because I have long had solar panels). There are plenty of places around the country that have lower rates than that, although perhaps not in California, from what I read here at TMC. At my local electric rate, my average usage of 266 Wh/mile works out to a mild 3.6¢/mile and my EPA par of 300 Wh/mile works out to 4¢/mile. Better than a 50 mpg Prius at $3.50/gallon, by a lot!

The reason I mention home electric rates is that for a typical moderate distance road trip, many of us leave home with a full(ish) battery and arrive home near empty. Those miles are filled in at our home rates. For those of us who do destination charging — campgrounds for me, hotels for others here — we start out each day with a full battery at no additional cost to that of the lodging fee. This reduces the amount of energy pulled from the rather expensive Supercharger Stations. In short, it's not just miles of a road trip divided by the cost of Supercharging!

Just sayin'... 😎

Local electricity rates are another factor that has both a direct and indirect effect on the amount Tesla charges at superchargers. For example, if the local rate is 24c/kWh in CA, it doesn't seem all that bad to pay 40c at a supercharger. But if the local rate is <10c/kWh, people feel like they're getting ripped off if you charge 40c.

And of course the fact that Tesla has to purchase the electricity at (or near) the local rates themselves has a direct impact on what they will charge.

Since Tesla almost certainly pays Demand rates for electricity, it is very hard to gauge how much their cost is. Stations that are heavily used, even just once per month, can lead to significant demand charges. As you say, we Supercharging customers use our home electric rates as a proxy to determine whether or not we are getting a good deal.

My sense is that Tesla averages rates over large areas, save for attempts to influence Supercharger Station usage in crowded places through discounts.

Nevertheless, I think cpa's point that even seemingly high Supercharger pricing is still a good deal (relative to buying gas) is a good one. Even if it seems high compared our home electric rates.

You’d be surprised the bargaining power Tesla can yield regarding demand charges (Think like Walmart and goods manufacturers)

Besides, they can mitigate this by installing power banks alongside the stations to draw in off peak for distribution on peak where it makes sense.

Well, for us, our rate is 25.5 cents per kWh until we breach the next tier, then it jumps to 40 cents or so. We do have solar panels. We do have gigantic trees, neighbors with large trees, and other impediments so that we likely receive about 70% of potential during the good times and 50% during fall when the sun is lower in the sky and our ginkgo and oak trees still have leaves. We have yet to enter the second tier, but have come close. Our annual settlement is around $350, so we don't feel that we should invest more in solar panels just to save a couple hundred bucks annually.

My wife primarily drives the 3. She only puts about 150 miles per month on the car(!) A Supercharger is on the way home from out of town excursions, so I usually fill up to 50% or so there before heading home when driving the '14 S.

Before someone suggests switching to TOU, with our four-plus months of highs from 95-108 and overnight lows around 68-72, it makes zero sense to gobble up electricity from 3-9PM at 5kW just for the AC, not to mention the small potato stuff like lights and TV. And we keep the house at 79 degrees. The PG&E rate comparison chart estimated that if we switched to TOU, our settlement would be north of $1,000/year.

That electric rate does close the gap with Supercharging costs considerably!

I don't have much in the way of shading issues with my ground-mount solar arrays (I cut some trees), although I do have to pull snow off of them frequently in winter, something that you don't have to do where you live (but I don't have to deal with AC here in the mountains). I am also able to adjust the pitch eight times a year from 55 degrees around the winter solstice to 15 degrees around the summer solstice, so that helps with production. My 2170 watt arrays have averaged 3275 kWh of annual production over the last nine years. I've built up a credit balance of about 1400 kWh over that time but the local power co-op is going to start reconciling production at the end of March every year, so I'll lose the excess at the wholesale rate of 4 cents/kWh in a couple of years when the new policy starts.

Agree. I think it cuts both ways. They could be paying more or less than the local utility rate depending on the situation.

New chargers to add! Winter & the seemingly endless barrage of kids sports & activities certainly put a damper on getting out and driving, so glad both are winding down a bit. My wife now getting involved chastising me for not grabbing Ocean City MD & the rest of DE on my weekend field hockey tournament trip for my daughter. As if the leaderboard isn't motivation enough...

We're on a quick 5 day trip to BC to hit the new Superchargers. It's nice to be back in Canada. The border crossing was painless - 4 cars ahead of me. The drive up here from Seattle was beautiful - sunny and clear and not much traffic. The trees are budding/blossoming. It looks like they've planted a lot more fruit trees and grapevines since we were last in this area 6 years ago.
