Superchargers - West Des Moines, IA

Awesome news!!!

I've been waiting for a supercharger at this site in order to make my trip from Rochester, MN to Omaha less anxiety provoking.

Doesn't look like there are a lot of dining options near that HyVee from the aerial photo.
The Hy-Vee store details can be found here:
Hy-Vee

It is a very nice grocery store with surprisingly good food at their Market Grille.
The Market Grille is like a regular restaurant within the grocery store.
I have not been to that particular location, but the store closer to my home is great.
There would be more limited options from 9 pm to 5 am.

Anyone know the average time between supercharger permit and construction being complete?

Just to be clear "Permit" on Supercharge.info doesn't specifically mean that there's a Permit, just that a site has been identified. "Contruction" means that somebody has shown that it is under construction, and "Open" means that somebody has shown that it is open and powered up.

In this case, negotiations are ongoing, so it's very early stages and not guaranteed.

Based on the data on supercharge.info Data and Changes tabs: there are 96 Superchargers in the USA where
1) Supercharge.info was notified of the site so was added in Permit status
2) The Supercharger is now in Open status.
The average number of days between those two statuses was 108.3854167 days.

Tesla Superchargers planned for West Des Moines Hy-Vee

That is really great news. Last year, we went to see friends in West Des Moines, but only with the stipulation that we could park in their garage and suck down power for a day and a half so we could continue or journey! We did, and it worked, but so much nicer to see a Supercharger in the area. See our story at:

Greetings TMC (West Des Moines, IA thread):

I just had a very nice e-mail exchange with Matthew - the author of the Des Moines Register article crmatson quoted.

He noted the following in response to my request for some additional details:

"Unfortunately, I don't have much more information at the moment. I reached out to Tesla for more details but have not received a response.

From what Hy-Vee told me, I don't believe this is an extended partnership, so it's just for the one location. As for an opening date, the only details I received were that Tesla/Hy-Vee hope the stations are up and running by the end of the year.

If I get other details, I'll be sure to update what I wrote.

For my own curiosity: Are you a Tesla driver in Iowa? Since Iowa doesn't allow direct sales and there are few public charging stations, I've been curious about the experience Tesla drivers have in the state."

I will check in with Matthew from time to time to see if he gets some additional details (and post the updates here). He has also noted that he'll update his column when he learns more.

Take care,
Chris

I'm not in Iowa, but I drive there semi-regularly. In general, states where direct sales aren't allowed don't really affect the Tesla owner much (there are exceptions). Most charging is done at home, so it's only on trips that you're charging elsewhere (unless you have no home charging).

Purchasing in generally a matter of ordering from the website and picking up the car at the nearest Service Centre (again there are some exceptions).

There are plenty of RV parks, which are generally faster than public charging. Also you can get a CHAdeMO adapter for a quicker, but not SC quicker, charge.

For the first two years of ownership the closest SC was about 1500 miles away and no CHAdeMO adapter (not that there were many CHAdeMOs available then). RV parks, destination charging locations, and PlugShare (for HPWCs at kind Tesla owners' houses or businesses) allowed us to go on trips just fine.

In three years and 68K miles, I've used public charging once. YCEMV

Since when are direct sales in Iowa illegal? I must not understand what a direct sale is. We bought our MS in December, 2015 while living in Iowa, directly from Tesla. Of course, we picked it up out of state because there is neither a showroom or service center in Iowa. But other than that, there were no issues buying a Tesla living in Iowa.

Hy-vee would be smart to work with Tesla and set up something in Iowa city on Dodge street and in Bettendorf on 53rd street, just like Meijer is doing in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. They have realized that most stops to charge translate into a sale. We are living proof of that!

What it means is that Tesla can't open a store and the paperworks shows you purchased the car elsewhere and brought it into Iowa. It really doesn't affect your ability to purchase a car, only some semantical differences. Should Tesla open a gallery in Iowa, their employees wouldn't be able to talk about financing or price. Annoying to Tesla, but not really a problem for the purchaser.

It's a bit more than that: In 2014, Tesla was holding a 3-day test drive event in Iowa. It was organized by the Tesla folks in Minneapolis. The Iowa Auto Dealers Association threw a fit saying one cannot give test drives without a dealer's license. They went to a judge and got an injunction forcing Tesla to cancel the last day of the event. Further (I just learned a few weeks ago) the state patrol "escorted" the Tesla folks to the state border. We heard about this up in Minneapolis, and so several of us Tesla owners drove down to Des Moines in October and spent the day at the Hy Vee over on Douglas Ave giving people "test rides". We weren't sponsored by Tesla, Tesla had nothing to do with it, so there was no way the luddite dealers association could stop us. And we had a blast! There was A LOT of interest in our Teslas and other electric cars that showed up for the occasion. Perhaps we'll do it again once this supercharger is up & running.

I agree, I hope Tesla further pursues their relationship with Hy Vee and installs SCs at their stores in Iowa City and Bettendorf.

This. I was set for an official test drive with Tesla and they were forced to cancel the event.

I appreciated the enthusiasts from Minnesota and Iowa who organized the event to allow Iowans to get a chance to ride in a Tesla and to speak with owners. What a great community!

I knew about the test drive issue and even wrote our local state rep. about it. I didn't think this state was that ignorant, easily swayed by special interests and behind times. Proved wrong again!

If you ever do anything like that down here again, let me know and I'd be happy to join as well...

Can Tesla offer 30 minute Tesla rentals for $1 in Iowa? :)

That's awesome! I'd come up from Kansas City for an event like that and I'm sure I could get a few folks from our KC Tesla community to come with me.

I'm not sure if this applies to the West Des Moines Supercharger site, but in looking at the Peru, Illinois Supercharger, they have been in the permitting process since February. Interestingly, they are also working within a HyVee location. This may be cause for concern in West Des Moines if corporate HyVee is somehow serving as a bottleneck for progress.
