Sydney to Port Macquarie & beyond in a P85D

My first long drive, to Port Macquarie and on to Byron. A few things really stood out:

1. Sydney to Port Macquarie in a P85D is a stretch until the Superchargers are operational. It was lucky I charged up at the Stockland Glendale Chargepoint. In the 2 hours I spent there, I added around 14 kWh or around 60 km. I arrived at The Observatory with 40 km remaining on the display. This was driving at or below 110 km/h on TACC, A/C on & autosteer almost the entire trip. So if you have a P85D and want to make it all the way, until the Superchargers appear, either top up in Newcastle or drive conservatively.

2. The Observatory is very good. Be sure to check & double check that one of the 2 HPWC's is available for use and not occupied because they're located in mobility access car spaces and one was occupied by a Mercedes when I arrived. Also don't expect to be able to monitor charging via any app. The car park is underground. Probably best to schedule the charging to start around midnight and it should be at 100% by about 8.30am. Alternatively charge to 90% on arrival then to 100% for around an hour in the morning.

3. Autopilot is one of the greatest advances in motoring and I definitely agree with all that have commented that it becomes so apparent during & after a long drive. Under/oversteer is evident during a long trip but I was certainly guiding it to a more correct line at any opportunity so that I might be able to detect any local learning along the same route next time. AP doesn't seem to cope with new sections of road, judging that I was going way too fast in a dead-end street and auto braking from 110 km/h to 70km/h. I accelerated back to cruise in about a second but would have been a real concern if somebody had been tailgating as was the case at various times during the drive.

4. Arrived at the Macadamia Castle with around 30 km remaining. I started charging with the intention of topping up around 15 kWh or a couple of hours charge time. Within a few minutes, a storm cell hit. Not unusual here but this was big. The J1772 adaptor was on the ground under the car to protect it from the rain. Within 5 minutes, there was a torrent of water. I disconnected with the app and ran to unplug it. Got drenched with a crowd of about 50 people watching intently. Somebody told me they were talking about my imminent electrocution. It was a serious deluge but the evnomics J1772 adaptor survived a real drenching.

Thanks for all the insights, WhiteStar- I head north FAR more often than Canberra/ Melbourne way, so I can't wait to have a few charging options there- Roll on NewcastleSupercharger ...

Definitely Doc. Hopefully it'll be operational some time in December because that leg really drains the battery into deficit. First time I've used my Chargepoint card in 2 years...so it was useful after all.

I haven't cruised much on the expressway-'does 125kph use much more power than city traffic?? I normally do about 180w/km around town. Maybe average 200 when driving more briskly. What might it be if I lived in a country where 120kph was legal on a six lane freeway???

I averaged around 210 Wh/km to PMQ & 180 Wh/km on the slower leg to the Macadamia Castle. Yes not sure what the figures are at 125 km/h but definitely much more to overcome the wind resistance. Incidentally there was a noticeably unhelpful headwind on the first leg to PMQ.

Wow - 180? I drive conservatively and my average around town is 217 -219.

I don't drive slowly and my average is 197-200.

125 is going to use a lot more. The wind resistance increases logarithmically with speed.

Use EV Trip Planner and play around with the figures especially the speed multiple. 125 uses heaps more juice than 100.

My return trip to Sydney via The Observatory on arrival at dinner time, guess what surprise was awaiting? A self-fulfilling prophecy…I got ICE’d :| It would have been easy to get cranky but what do you do? The only thing I could do - parked 4 cars in…I EV’d them :) Left a note but in the end it wasn’t a big deal…I got up at 6am & moved the car out of their way.

The interesting thing was I got a knock on the door later. It was the manager, he was very apologetic & kindly took $100 off the bill for having to get up at 6am! Great! He said that they could already see the benefits of the Tesla chargers in the very short time they’ve had them & wanted to encourage more Tesla drivers to visit. They’re going to move the mobility parking spaces & fence off the Tesla HPWC’s! No more getting ICE’d there!

I like The Observatory. It is a really good hotel, very comfortable, very good restaurant & café, also one of the few 100% carbon neutral hotels in Australia apparently. Also very impressive - the speed of the 40A HPWC’s.

Yes it's a great hotel. The penthouse is huge, affordable and has an amazing view, my wife and I had it for a few days over the weekend of our wedding.

it has 50kW of panels on the roof. See photo here: Our Environmental Efforts - The Observatory

I like this photo. I forgot there were 230 panels 50 kW up there. That is awesome.

Achieved excellent Range from Port SC to Pyrmont Sydney SC at the Casino.

70D with 3 x pax and full of luggage front and rear, with AC, music set on range mode traveling daytime.

381km leg with a stop in Heatherbrae Maccas mid journey. Average 150wh/km over distance. Had 57km rated range left on arrival. (Achievable range approx 440km)

Charge 100% at Port SC....(70D (75 battery) charges with little ramp off even at 99% see attached)

Conclusion = Port to Sydney SC doable in 60D/70D easily! 70D can achieve rated or better!

You're right, those are excellent numbers! I think you must’ve had favourable tailwinds while I definitely had unfavourable headwinds. Add to that the efficiencies of the 70D compared to the P85D loaner I drove on the same route (at the speed limit or lower) when I had to stop for a top up charge so I could make the distance.

150 Wh/km vs 190 Wh/km is a huge difference.
