Unfortunately, the Tesla rack is just painted, too, and scratches badly with use.
I'd be scared to install the Taptes rack with the generic nut and no torque wrench, though. At least the Tesla rack comes with a thumbscrew and hex wrench that make it a little harder to over-torque. Better would be one of those T-handle wrenches with the built-in torque indicator, but that would cost money that manufacturers don't want to spend.
In all my research I've come to the understanding that Tesla rack has flaws and so at worst this TeslaTap rack will have the same flaws. Proper installation, maintenance, and sticking to the revised torque specs is the best prevention for roof cracks.
I had one, the racks are not straight so you have to level your bike holder. Luckily i had some spacers and worked it out. It's fine for what it is, didn't include any locks or ppf. I didn't have any problems lugging two bikes around.
