Tax Credit: Pay Date or Delivery Date?

I ordered in October, and the last email I got told me to expect delivery in the last two weeks of December. I can pay as soon as I get a VIN.

Is the credit based on the payment date or the delivery date?

How reliable do you think the estimate is?

It will be the date that is on your MVPA that you will sign to take possession of the car. That will be the same as your delivery date, most likely.

We have this conversation every year. Guess this is the last one unless we do get an extension sometime! The IRS clearly states it’s ‘in service’ date (when you take delivery) and that sure should match your paperwork. People always want workarounds for this and who knows if the IRS ever checks or will check unless an audit. But the legal date is delivery date.
