If purchasing two tesla's the same year I was told to put one in my name and the other in my wife's. That may be good but how does it work when you file joint? Can you still take the $7500 x2?

There is no limit to the number of new vehicles that you can take the EV tax credit on. Don't title them like you suggest just for tax purposes. There may be other reasons to but not the $7,500 tax credit.
The limit that you may run into would be that you would need $15,000 of tax liability between you and your spouse to tax full advantage of the tax credit.
