I didn't make it to the event but I did drive down on Saturday (Melb to Adelaide), stayed over night in the Horsham International Hotel, meet up with Trevor in Keith on Sunday and now in Adeliade.

Saw many Tesla's travelling in the opposite direction, most I've ever seen in the one drive.

All chargers worked no issues, easy drive....I think I'll drive all my trips to see my customers in Adelaide for now on...
Saw your car in Adelaide Sunday afternoon whilst on my way to the pub. Also saw it at Chadstone in Melbourne last Christmas; very distinctive paint job.

Tesla big battery outsmarts lumbering coal units after Loy Yang trips

To be clear, on the timing of the response of this generators, some did some minor adjustments (1MW) as part of regulation FCAS, the moment they dropped below 50Hz.

The interesting thing here is the speed with which Tesla responded to the contingency FCAS market, which is triggered after frequency gets to 49.8Hz. That was pretty much instantaneous. And they did it from a standing start, unlike the other generators.

Tesla weren’t officially playing in that market, but just wanted to show what they could do. And they did. That’s what’s impressive, and what’s game changing.

As for timing, Loy Yang A started to lose it at 1.58:59 (NEM time). Its biggest drop, from 364MW to 176MW, was at 1.59:19, which is where frequency hit 49.8Hz, and which is where Tesla came in a matter of milliseconds (but recorded in the 1.59:23 time frame).

Gladstone 1, a contingency FCAS supplier, hopped in at 1.59:27. Loy Yang was down to 44MW by then and completely gone in the next 4 second period.

Strange thing is the former labor government in SA convinced the masses that its state owned, and cost $35m. We since learnt that neonn recieved $35m as a grant, and its not state owned. Its making the french company bucketloads of cash.

While simultaneously saving the SA Govt bucketloads of cash by preventing a lot of the system gaming that is sadly rampant in our electricity market. Inside the Tesla big battery: How it made money and cut prices | RenewEconomy

No not at all. The SA government have a deal for its power at a fixed price per kwh, as do all households and SME’s. The claimed massive saving was passed onto consumers a few months ago with a reduction of 0.1c per kwh. (AGL)
Meanwhile the french owner pocketed millions in income, bagged a decent grant, and has an agreement with the state for the state to make a minimum power purchase from them. Sure the battery has removed the peaky market, but no consumer or government gain has yet been realised.

Love the Battery but unfortunately its just another company taking advantage of our #@$%$# up energy policy.
... do we think its a coincidence that the worlds biggest battery finds a profitable home in our modest country that has horrendous power prices?
Soooo many generation companies get paid $MM's a month for just having a standby asset sitting idle doing NOTHING.
Thats what gets layered onto our domestic power bills.

Disappointing that there is no mention of reducing gas demand rather than only increasing supply,. We need to modernise and move demand from gas to electricity, especially when matched with solar supply. Electricity prices will reduce due to plunging solar costs and battery prices will reduce once EV penetration has increased a little more globally, reducing gas demand will also help. Longer range EV’s are becoming the norm and are capable of choosing to charge when the grid pricing is slow, especially midday on Sat/Sun, to help balance the grid.
 
Under The Greens, a Hornsdale would be commonplace & we’d already be at 100% renewable by now
Problem is most of the older voting generation label them ‘communists’ (as if it’s bad thing, because they conflate authoritarianism with communism) & brainwash their kids growing into adults to think likewise. Without the ‘baggage’ of the Cold War & the dying off of the older generations, we may be able to move forward with greater levels of critical thinking towards engaging with the ideas of socialism & communism. Nordic & Scandinavian countries are more embracing of socialism than most, yet have some of the highest GDP per capita rates in the world, the highest education rates, highest quality of life & so on.
